Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars The MOST So-So Songs EVER!!!!.......2006-09-28

World music compilations are now big business. Originally, Peter Gabriel's Real World label, Putumayo World Music, and Six Degrees Records and a handful of other labels did world music compilations. You can still get "Beer Hall Songs of Berlin" and "100 Irish Jigs" in bargain bins.

Now,TIME LIFE,which gives you those late-night/early-morning infomercials on "The Greatest Disco Hits of the '70s!" collections,is getting into the world music act. They go for the songs that are the most popular, the most Westernized, and the most overplayed (is it any wonder this CD is at Wal-Mart?)Miriam Makeba's "Pata Pata",the Buena Vista Social Club's "Chan Chan",Clannad, and Ottmar Liebert's "Barcelona Nights" are the only highlights. The infamous '90s hit "Macarena" is included, along with the Gipsy Kings' overplayed "Bomboleo"&Santana's tiresome "Oye como va." I heard those at way too many college gatherings. There's the Hawaiian version of "Over the rainbow" that has become a staple for anything sappy in TV or the movies, along with Sergio Mendes' "Mas que nada."

For those who enjoy world music, this compilation is best avoided. This one relies on the tried&"true"---and tiresome.
