Customer Reviews:
dissapointing, not the real Environments 3...What's wrong with Atlantic?.......2006-08-17
The Original Environments 3 has a 1960s "Be-In" entitled 'A Psychoacoustic Experience' recorded at Sheep Meadow, Central Park, New York City April 6th, 1969.
"The 1969 Easter Be-In in New York's Central Park has come to be regarded as a sort of higher-water mark for the now almost vanished Love Generation.
The tremendously diverse crowd kept growing and gathering momentum until almost everyone marveled at this spontaneous "thing" that had taken place in the park.
This Be-In was certainly not the biggest gathering of young people to take place in 1969. However, there are many things that happened during this recording that make it a rare, almost magical moment.
The recording captures with honesty and total realism this particular instant in time which in retrospect seems more than a bit unreal.
Be-In is the real experience of running barefoot in the grass on a beautiful spring day, surrounded by thousands of half-innocents exhibiting little, if any, trace of paranoia or guilt.
If you were ever at a massive, totally spontaneous gathering in 1969, we think you know the feeling we mean.
This particular disc is unlike anything you've ever heard before; we call it a "psychoacoustic experience". It recreates an event with such realism that it actually seems to be happening again. We think that once you experience the total immersion of this encounter, you'll agree with us that Be-In is something special." -taken from the back of the original LP produced by Syntonic Research, Inc. for Atlantic Recording Corporation.
I can't believe that they would decide to scrap such a unique recording of American culture, and probably the most unique recording of the Environment Series. Unbelievable. Maybe because such a beautiful recording of American culture of this time that communicates freedom and love so pure is ultimately bad for business. Since there's a clear demographic of people in the market that listen to those 'nature' CDs. Sold everywhere from Wal-mart to Hallmark stacked inside psuedo-jukeboxes with scenic push button selected samples etc.
It was clearly the selling point in 1970 when the LP was released. It's evident to me since the cover of the original LP doesn't have a sunset on it but instead a box of flowers, beeds, fractal red sunglasses, and buttons stating things such as; "Let's Love One Another", "Reality Is A Crutch",& "If It Feels Good I'll Do It".
I think we should be asking Why aren't we being sold this 'package' anymore?
Is it because we don't wanna be sold this or is it because these companies don't wanna sell us this?
I want the Be-In.
Not the same as the original "Environments 3".......2004-02-05
The 3rd lp put out in this series in 1971 had the sounds of the 1969 Central Park "Be-in" on one side, and "Dusk at New Hope" on the other. It seems unlikely that Atlantic will ever release that version again, though.
Rochester's Classical Station Starts Day with Birds!.......2003-04-29
WXXI-FM, 91.5, Rochester's classical public radio station opens its day with an excerpt from Dawn at New Hope, Pennsylvania. Many listeners have commented that they appreciate 'the birds' as a pleasant way to wake up. The recording is excellent apart from the minor criticism that the sounds are 'looped' and persistant scrutiny reveals that the the same birds reappear, as do a couple laughing and a jet plane. These are insignificant intrusions and shouldn't affect your enjoyment of the CD.
Please Bring Back the "Environments" Series, on CD!.......2002-06-04
"New Hope, PA" is perhaps the most beautiful of an aesthetically and technically unparalleled collection of "natural sounds" recordings known as the "Environments" series. This series, which puts other natural sounds recordings (/w or w/o music) to shame, was first issued in the 1970's on vinyl, using an advanced recording process that allowed the listener to hear every breath, every crackle, every ripple, every flap of a falling leaf, all painstakingly recording by expert audio artists. The excellent sound quality of the LP recordings cries out for a CD release (or even a vinyl release!), and the variety of sound captures in the dozen-odd albums reveals artistic imagination in selection as well as in recording: The lush and colorful orchestra of birds singing in "Optimal Aviary", the ebb and flow of "Ultimate Ocean", the intense beat and deep beauty and mystery of the most vital of anatomical organs in "Ultimate Heartbeat", "Tintinnabulation" (the chorus of soft high, medium and deep-pitched bells is wonderful to hear; the producers recommended you play it at any of the four LP speeds (16 2/3, 33 1/3, 45, and 78 rpm), as well as more traditional themes of rainstorms (that naturally calming hypnotic patter of water drops that for a time was the only sound the ailing WC Fields could go to sleep to), thunderstorms (NOT the relentless and tasteless crash-bang of a THX Dolby Sensurround hurl-you-out-of-your-chair cut-and-paste movie soundtrack, but a recording that faithfully depicts the artistic composition and orchestration of of a purely natural phenomenon, from the dead calm, to the light breeze, to the faint rumbles and cracklings far off in the distance, growing nearer and nearer, and nearer... Perhaps the least successful (as a repeat play "environmental recording") of the series was "Be-In", a fascinating and delightful capture of the sounds (not just the indicidual sounds, but again, the entire composition of interlaced sounds) one could hear at an authentic "hippy love-in" of the late '60's. Its only limitation was that because it included some human speech and other "artificial" sounds (bongo drums, whistles, shouts and the like) which we interpret differently from non-semantic-laden sounds (those of you who can hear the human voice as a natural phenomenon need not worry), it did not bear as much cyclic repetition as the rest of the works in the series. Those reviewers who report playing a single recording (such as "Rain") All Night Long are NOT exaggerating one bit. These recordings are genuinely "environmental" in the second sense, as sounds used to produce your own audio environment. I successfully used these recordings for a time to go to -- and stay -- asleep at a time in my life when I was too stressed even for medication to calm me down and alleviate my tension headaches. These recordings are good food and fine wine for the ears -- "New Hope, PA" in particular is as fundamentally beautiful an environmental piece of the American experience as Grant Wood's "American Gothic" painting, or Aaron Copeland's music. It is well worth savoring -- as are the rest in the series, which truly Ought to be re-release in an age when sound technology has finally caught up with the artistic ear. -- RDB
WONDERFUL- More CDs from the ENVIRONMENTS record series!.......2002-04-07
Wonderful, wonderful record now available in CD format. I am HOPING that more of the records will be issued as CDs. The quality of many "nature" CD's are very poor... or have music blended into them that just does not work. This whole series is great but hard to find in the original LP record (only available) format. Tintinnabulation is also great but hard to come by on CD. The NEW HOPE, PA is great especially for us city dwellers who need a little nature sometimes. It is very soothing after a long day to wind down with "DUSK" recording. Very realistic!
