Future History is NOW.......2004-01-31
Ever get a cd that you just wanted to play for everyone you know? A cd that you placed into the "you gotta hear this" category. "Future History" is one of those! Complex yet accessible. The trumpet is a paint brush in the hands of Jimmy Wilson. Future History is a painting. Each solo is a composition within a composition, never there for its' own sake but for the contribution it makes to the bigger picture, adding a dimension and emotional depth not present moments before.
"Super Hero" begins with a funky drum riff followed by a sixteenth note feel in the bass and guitar. They give the listener a very real impression that something is about to happen as chords begin to progress and the first theme played by Mr. Wilson appears. One is swept into a dreamy landscape full of wonderment. The bass playing is some of the most lyrical I've heard since Jaco on "Cannonball". The tone is so airy and full, the melody so captivating, I swear I float with each hearing. Jimmy Wilson's music rarely leads to where one might expect, but once there, the listener realizes that it could not have gone anywhere else (enter the funky 16 bar interlude). With the repeating of the theme traded by various instruments, this piece never wants for direction, forward movement ever building to its' end.
"Apparitions" begins with some Chick Corea-RTF-like chords on the Rhodes (or something that sounds like the Rhodes). Don't let the comparison take away from this song's "originality" for the context is nothing you've heard from Chick. One of the sexiest voices heard on cd enters and hits its' mark which is to seduce. "Pleased to meet you, my name is triple three times two". The texture of the orchestration is full of atmosphere. The voicings are melodic and once again, the note selection and bass tone hearken back to the days of Mr. Pastorius.
Every piece on this cd is a winner. The last track is "In Dreams". So satisfying is the listening, I wonder if Miles, Joe Zawinul, Jaco, Gil Evans, were all in the room encouraging Mr. Wilson onward, and as the last notes echoed, he turned catching a glimpse of their apparitions, finding "Future History" where only a footprint remained. Was it a dream or reality? You decide!
Jimmy Wilson's "Future History".......2003-07-21
With Future History, Jimmy Wilson creates an enchanting masterpiece of sound that introduces jazz-fusion to world music to African rhythms. Each track tells its own story and takes you along on its journey, vis a vis the creative collaboration of several notable artists such as Chester Thompson, Dennis Chambers, Scott Ambush, Gerald Veasley, Gary Grainger, George and Geoff Hazelrigg. Wilson blends the styles of Lee Morgan, Clifford Brown and Miles Davis to this unique sound experience of melodic and often sultry songs. The tightness of the playing of all artists mediates us a new sound-experience, never heard before.
