Customer Reviews:
You have got to hear this.......2001-12-01
It isn't Christmas at our house without Kurt Bestor. His arrangments are amazing. I would not call in new age at all. This is the music you want on when you cuddle up in front of the fire and watch the snow fall. It is peacful and enjoyable. I wish he would come out with another one (I already have his entire Christmas collection). Just listen to it before you knock it. You'll fall in love.
Only slightly better than Volumes 1 and 2.......2001-05-24
If you've read my reviews of Kurt Bestor's other two Christmas albums (volumes 1 and 2), you know that I don't care for his music very much. Well, while I still don't care for this album very much, I will give it 2 stars instead of just 1, because I think it is just *slightly* better than his first two Christmas albums. I would still encourage you to try other Christmas CD's first, before you buy any new-age ones like this.
I personally don't think new-age arranging suits Christmas carols very well. I'm not saying that every Christmas arrangement needs to be totally "classical" in its flavor, just that it should have some degree of originality and integrity. Sometimes you DO want some gentle, unobtrusive "background" music to play at Christmas, and loud thrilling Christmas albums aren't the thing. But even for those quieter moments, there are many, far-better CD's to choose from.
Some people think of Bestor's Christmas arrangements as "fully orchestrated," which totally baffles me. If you are someone who likes your Christmas carols "fully orchestrated" you will be sorely disappointed with any of Bestor's Christmas albums, and I would recommend that you try to find Christmas albums with REAL orchestras featured on them, such as Arthur Fiedler's "Christmas Festival" or a "Carnegie Hall Christmas" featuring Kathleen Battle -- now THERE'S a great CD! It's ecclectic and even features some jazz arrangements with Marsalis and his ensemble.
Here's a hint: When looking for good quality Christmas music at Amazon.com, try entering the word "Christmas" in the ***"Classical Music"*** field, instead of in the "Popular Music" field (the default). You'll be steered in a better direction.
