4 out of 5 stars A Considered meditation.......2002-05-08

By all means, buy this used if you have to. It's a treasure of Liz Story. I, too, had this when vinyl but it's long worn out. I missed till I found another one, CD, here and oh is it a joy to listen to. Her style is thoughtful, considered, and considerate. "Melancholy," a few have said & I guess that underlies it, sure, but it's not a sad thing. It's just the way we interpret such thoughtful, deeply felt moments. Meditative but moving. My favorite tracks are Part of Fortune and, the unexpected vocal treat of Liz and a church choir doing Durufle's Ubi Caritas et amore so loving, passionately that you fall back into love just hearing it. This, along with Unaccountable Effect, are my favorites of her CDs doing her own compositions from the early days. So many artists owe her a debt of gratitude for showing another way; she sings with her fingers and her "voice" is sure.

5 out of 5 stars What a tragedy this is no longer available.......2001-11-26

This is the first Liz Story album I ever bought (on vinyl) back in the mid-80's. I was enchanted with it then and I still am. I cherish it even more now knowing that it is out of print. I was only a teenager when I heard about Liz (I think one of my teachers recommended her because I had been listening to new age music), so I went out to the record store and found "Part of Fortune." Sure, there are great pop piano players but Liz Story runs rings around them--for some reason Tori Amos keeps coming to mind, but Tori only wishes she could tickle the ivories like Liz. The title track alone is worth the price. The thing about Liz is that her choice of "covers" and her original compositions are always tinged with a bit of melancholy--at least they are here. The piano actually becomes a voice and it's not always singing a happy tune. Buy it used if you have to--it's worth every penny. Thanks, Liz, for all these years of fantastic music.
