4 out of 5 stars great noise but hateful thoughts.......2005-07-30

NON has some awesome noize music. In todays world of hatred , racism , intolerance and apathy- the mindset of this self proclaimed neo-nazi , and head of the church of satan (i do believe this is correct, or at one time was with Michael Monhiyan)-- it is not a needed thing. I love his music- his solo stuff but as I matured and decided to be an adult- I put away childish things and the need for an image of intensity. take it for what it is- make up your own mind--- enjoy the noise- follow your heart and mind about his beliefs and rationalization. We must not forget that htis is the same Boyd Rice who fought in the 1970's for the release of Charles Manson from prison.Dont believe it- do your research--- it is in the Re-Search books , the Industrial Revolution issue that features Cabs, TG , EN ,PTV etc. Dont let my knowledge and opinions make up your mind- listen and make up your own.As I said--- musically- Boyd / NON is a genius for his noise and other "poppier" sounds he has done.

3 out of 5 stars A strong effort..........2004-08-20

NON strike back with this menacing mix of loops, grating sounds and interesting beats that will leave any fan of the "electronic ritual" satisfied. The group mixes the raw natures of early industrial with ritual-styled sounds and beatwork to compose a strong (aka consistent) work that scrapes and slides through the darker aspects of the human psyche. The playing is perfectly co-ordinated leaving little to critique and the production is digital and clear. This doesn't remove the edge from the work, it more creates a seperation from the warmth of the body and the cold of the mind, leaving the listener in a suspended state of thought. Quality production and diverse atmospheres mark the NON landscape with even more digitized darkness than previously unveiled on the groups earlier recordings.

The strongest numbers presented on this release shiver and scortch through various strong soundscapes such as the opening "God and Beast" along with the powerful "Millstones". All of the material is varied enough to carry a strong mood and nothing falls into the electronic-dance kitsch that kills much of this material for me. Much like a ritual itself, this music ebs and flows in patterns that stimulate the mind into a strange state of gentle sensory violence. Compositionally raw, yet completely structured all at once. Loose nerves, deep thoughts and a forboding sense of purpose mark the songs on this release.

NON are a strange entity that few will be able to comprehend, but for those "in the know" this is a strong release. The pretense is overpowered by the strong sense of mood and melody that permeates it's digital-clear (hence cold) mix. Quality music for exploring the raw intellect - leaving the emotion to struggle in it's own realm seperated from the raw shots and wanderings of the mind.

I suggest that you buy it...

5 out of 5 stars A satisfying listen!.......2001-08-12

I personally think his IN THE SHADOW OF THE SWORD CD is the coolest, but this one's almost as great.Since the former CD is probably out of print this 'll do it for ya!I saw the man live prior to hearing this and he did some of this live.Well, versions utillizing looped vocals and a drum machine.Great stuff! This album is well-recorded and has a remake of SHADOW's TOTAL WAR.In person the man was very nice to my friends and I.I don't believe he's such a bad guy with hateful views.

God And Beast. This album took SOME getting used to, it didin't click as fast as Recieve the Flame, but that does not mean it's not a good album, in fact, it's great. The noise on this one is pretty harsh for the most part, the second track, Venus And Mars is great, the venus and mars analogy for balance works really well I think. Millstones is a sloweer track with some intresting soundscapes involving chimes(?), Tooth And Claw is pretty good, but my favorite track by far is OUT OUT OUT, Boyd's voice really adds to the tracks when he speaks or screams, I think all these elements blend together and compliment each other very well to create a great album. This album features some guest stars as well, such as Douglas P. and Rose McDowell. All in all this is a good album and more than worth the price.

4 out of 5 stars A return to form.......2000-01-04

Boyd Rice lost me when he went into the whole Social Darwinism spoken word bit. Whatever happened to looped noise, weird samples, tones and drones? Fear not, as God and Beast offers up a healthy compromise of the two styles. It still maintains his vocal presence with rather predictable rhymes and things, but the music it supports is what makes this one worthwhile. There are reprises of "songs" from his older albums such as "Total War" and "Out Out Out," reinvented and in some cases improved. Rose McDowall and Douglas P (Death in June) make appearances.
