Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars experimental techno, with a darker flair.......2007-02-20

One of those bands that only the "cool people" in my school listened to, my wife got me into Cabaret Voltaire around 1990. Sparse techno/ early industrial dance, they were way ahead of their time. The song that was playing in the clubs in 89/90 was the title track.

4 out of 5 stars Atmospheric dance music.......2007-02-11

This influential British band created different styles of experimental music throughout the various phases of their career. They were pioneers in the use of found sounds and tape loops. Their most memorable song, in my opinion, is the classic single Nag Nag Nag with its compelling beat and appealing guitar distortion.

The Crackdown from 1986 found them in a dance/electronic phase, with a sound not unlike some of the work of Brian Eno, Simple Minds or even the much later Autechre. At fist listen, the album may come across as somewhat monotonous although repeated listens will reveal the subtle textures that make the music absorbing and enjoyable.

The opening track 24-24 is spacious and melodious while In The Shadows has interesting percussion and keyboard. The lilting Talking Time is quite tuneful and accessible, reminding me of the classic number I Travel by Simple Minds. Another highlight is the hypnotic track Over And Over with its appealing instrumental mix. Just Fascination is atmospheric and mesmeric whilst the rhythmic Why Kill Time has an innovative texture.

The song with the most discernible found sounds is Haiti, an ominous experimental excursion. The title track is a rhytmic dancefloor classic and is followed by four extra tracks from an earlir period on this edition. The Crackdown is not Cabaret Voltaire's most innovative or memorable album, but fans will enjoy it. Real rating: three and a half stars.

5 out of 5 stars Rich, rhythmic and darkly coloured.......2006-11-27

At the time, this was Cabaret Voltaire's most coherent manifesto of their musical ideas and styles. It was quite unlike anything which came before it and quite unlike the next Cabaret Voltaire album, Micro-Phonies. "The Crackdown" (the song) and "Just Fascination" were the closest things to singles on this album and both were presented in remixed and lengthened versions. It would have been a brave DJ in the early 1980s who would have played music like this.

Musically, The Crackdown is music more complex and layered (even though is "gooves" in a very agreeable way) than Micro-Phonies, which in turn, is much more stark with its naked beats.

The music of this album is superbly crafted and owes little to anything before it. The Cabs really discovered their own style and they did many interesting things with it.

The lyrics of this album exhibit a black sense of humour and certain degree of poetic cynicism.

Cabaret Voltaire were one of the most important "underground" bands of the last thirty years. Today, we would call this music "Industrial", but this music was created before that term became widely known and accepted. SPK, Test Department and Einsturzende Neubauten touched upon this style, but never with the same degree of precision, creativity and success as Cabaret Voltaire.

If you missed this ensemble the first time around, now is the perfect time to re-examine this music, made by people who were making music above and beyond the dreary old standard guitar/bass guitar/drums combo even in the late 1970s!

If karlheinz Stockhausen had decided to become a Punk/Funk rocker, this is what the result would have been!!!

4 out of 5 stars Cab please!.......2006-08-17

NOw this was mybe the first cabaret voltaire record i bought when it came out. And what a revelation it was. This was in some ways very commercial but also very very experimental. They were trying to leave the minimalist days behind them and produced this massively beautiful electronic record where they mix dance tracks with weird experimental stuff.

4 out of 5 stars The crackdown.......2006-05-13

One of the best records by Cabaret Voltaire together with Red Mecca and Hai. The music flows and it is creative. Experimental but you can listen to it well from the beginning to the end.
