Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good, but she could have done more.......2003-03-14

For those of you who've heard Gunn's earlier release, VANITY OF VENUS, THE SUN AT MIDNIGHT will take you back down familiar paths: friendly, somewhat jazzy rhythms made of interesting piano melodies backed up with well-done woodwind and synthesizer sounds, plus great strings on some tracks. Though VANITY OF VENUS was beautiful and this one is too, I was a bit disappointed to note the repetition. (Hence the three stars, rather than the four I would have given the album if it stood alone. Unfair? Maybe.)

As I listened to more of the album, I began to hear great percussion, new rhythms, and were those...bagpipes? (Maybe synthesized bagpipes, as I don't see pipes of any kind in the credits.) Admittedly, much of the album is the same sounds as last time -- I would have liked to see some style growth -- but they're put together in different ways and new elements are added. And now and then one takes you completely by surprise, such as the driving percussive rhythms of "Au Par au Bellum" -- which is, by the way, my favorite track -- or the eastern-influenced "Temple Cat." If you liked the last one, you'll like this one, too, and if you didn't hear the last one, prefer it for massage purposes, but either album is a good one just for listening.

5 out of 5 stars Vanity of Venus.......2000-07-23

To All Whom This Concerns: As I am looking for Cheryl Gunn's latest release, you have it but I cannot listen to the music selections. As a massage therapist, I found her Vanity of Venus to be relaxing, uplifting and truly inspirational. When I can hear her latest release(The Sun at Midnight), I will probably purchase it. My clients are even able to fall asleep during their therapy sessions, while listening to her hypnotic sound.

4 out of 5 stars Great New Artist!.......1999-11-29

This album stirs the emotions in many different ways and makes the listener feel as though they are taking an inner journey. I recommend listening to this when you have some time to sit down and relax and fully enjoy the time. This album is to the ears what "aromatherapy" is to the sense of smell...
