Will the man that play such great sounds exist?.......2004-11-23

Koutarou Oshio is a new guitarist who is breaking in Japan music scene. The playing genre is acoustic guitar that no include song, only guitar sounds. Such instrumental guitar is not major genre in Japan music scene. But because he play great sounds so that men can believe, he show in many media, TV, radio, DVD etc. He received the influence of many old great guitarists like Mikel Hedges, Isato Nakagawa, in addition to that, he has evolved his technique by hisoneself unique way. For that, when we listen to his cd, we can feel the emotion or music scence that we have never felt.

First, his greatest point is the technique. Because I play a classical guitar, I can know the play ability to some extent though the genre of claasic and accoustic is a little different. For instance, in classical guitars, the low strings play like bass, and the high strings play as the melody parts, we can listten to the classical guitar sounds as if the guitar is played by more than two player. Therefore classical guitar is called[small orchestra instrument]. Off course accoustic guitar instrumental music can be said the same thing. But the more great points in this cd is that Oshio play style is incredible sounds as if the cd is played more than three players, that is to say, in addition to bass sounds and melody sounds, by tapping the body of a guitar, he play drum sounds even. He use all guitar parts, off course the strings of the guitar, neck, top body, head even. In a mean, he may be a revolutional guitarist.

Two, he love the melodies not only techniques, too. Off course such technique songs like Fantasy, Blue sky, Tension and Hard rain is wonderful. But the melodias calm song like Komorebi is great, too. Komorebi means [sunlight streaming through the leaves of trees)by English. The song explain just the atmosphere, that is, the melodiase, beautiful, calm melodies, the slow tender tempo is like being about to fall sleeping.

There is not many guitarists who can play with both way of great technique and sentimental sounds. If there may be only Oshio.

Acoustic Hedging.......2003-07-28

Anybody who misses Michael Hedges, should keep their ear turned to this fellow. Only Peter Mayer's music (especially his live performances) has made me think of Hedges in this way. But Kotaro Oshio's music is even more like Hedges--though less mature than Mayer's at this point. Oshio's passion is abundant in driven acoustic pieces like "Hard Rain." The harmonic percussion style of acoustic guitar remains alive in Kotaro Oshio.

Hey, I'm the first one!.......2003-01-19

I heard this CD being played at my local Borders and instantly fell in love with the beautiful guitar music emanating from the ceiling. Kotaro's acoustic musicianship has so much depth that it is hard to tell there is only one guitar being played. Both slow and fast songs are included, with the speedier tunes including a percussive feel. Kotaro's music is both simple and complex (don't ask me how), and this CD includes some of the best acoustic guitar playing I have had the pleasure of hearing.
