Customer Reviews:
great fusion.......2007-03-21
At least 4 stars. That would be my true rating. As I am writing this the album is at 3 1/2 *; that is an injustice. This record deserves more, thats why I give it 5.
This is an ESSENTIAL fusion album IMO; the freeness of miles davis, combined (at times) with the intensity of Mahavishnu; however, more chromatic. You want ambient, listen to the last track; you want intensity, listen to "Hootenanny at the pink pussycat" (4th track I believe).
Of course this is chromatic music, not completely atonal, but it is out there. If you are looking for something with pretty memorable melodies, look elsewhere; however, there are some very memorable aspects to this chromatic concotion, and I cannot emphasize how good those aspects are. It's not noise, but it is almost free form; like a jam with distinct cues. Unique, dark, sometimes ambient, intense, free fusion, with opaque, but barely transparent musical patterns that maintain independence as a part in a sequence. That sounds a bit snobby & esoteric, but it's the best description I can give; the music is hard to decipher. The lead guitar, bass and drums are all top notch. These are all 1st rate players trying something a bit different, and it came out great. Anything I say wont do it justice anyway; it's to indescribable, which is the only minus point to this darn album.
But, it's good stuff mang! If you are a fusion collector you need this.
Great adventurous jamming..........2005-06-08
with a futuristic sound but initially a let down if, like me, you prefer the polished playing of King Crimson who balance improvisation with composition. Go straight to The Power to Believe if thats the case. Rieflin is a jazzier player than Mastelotto which makes for an interesting comparison and you can tell this trio is having fun with the open ended parametres of the material.
From a musicians perspective this is a perfect non scripted environment to play, how listeners interact is personalised value judgement, I think it will be a grower for those ambient ramblings around the home!
Great Free Metal Space Jazz.......2004-09-22
Crazy man, crazy... If you liked the KCrimson Projects, especially 1 and 4 you'll love this collection of freely improvised ambient metallic and electric skronk/jazz/rock. One moment they're chewing into your brain like robotic earwigs on a mission, the next blissfully floating away on clouds of halucinogenic pepper spray. Not for those who don't enjoy musicians stepping out and communicating with one another in unprescribed ways. These boys can shred and chill. Fripp's use of electric guitar and electronics is astounding. Rieflin is an incredible drummer and Trey Gunn on touch guitar (has the range of both bass and guitar) is both subtle and thunderous. Great stuff.
The real ProjeKCt one.......2002-10-29
Let's not beat around the bush ,if you are a fan of the King Crimson ProjeKCts then you will want to own this disc.Recorded shortly before the double trio's aborted Nashville Sessions and the resulting fractalisation of KC this disc is a splendid signpost to the future and also provides us with the opportunity to hear Trey Gunn and Robert Fripp open up and go for it for the first time.
Clearly Fripp relishes working with Gunn in particular and plays with such obvious enthusiasm on this disc that it is an absolute joy to hear. This is some of his most passionate playing for years.
More akin to ProjeKCt 4 than the quirky ( but fabulous) ProjeKCt 2 this is highly recommended
Not my style.......2002-02-05
I heard the first song and was thinking this was going to be an album of powerful, interesting melodies. The remainder is different, sounding harsh to the ears and avoiding reliable or compelling rhythms. The performers are talented, and have shone elsewhere, but not here.
