How To Unwind On A Dreary Day.......2006-02-23

I shy away from writing reviews that use words like 'relaxing.' Not because I don't like relaxing music - I am addicted to 'New Age,' after all. But words like 'relaxing,' or 'mellow,' don't really tell the listener what to expect, other than there are no jagged edges. A lot of this type of music is more better described as 'unobtrusive' and, frankly, I like music that draws my attention. When I say relaxing, I mean music to refocus to, not music to provide a pleasant background to my anxieties. Hence my love for Eric Tingstad and Nancy Rumbel.

This duet exhibits something that I can only call musicality. Both are superb technically, and master improvisers. But it is their ear for the nuances of harmony and song that really makes the difference. When you have to world class musicians who understand the listener and can make their instruments speak with such distinct clarity, then you have mastery. And Paradise is an album full of their best efforts.

To some degree Tingstad and Rumbel have folk roots, as is apparent in something like Mansfield Park. But don't expect only one style from them. They also excel at flashes of light jazz like their treatment of The Wanderer. This album covers their spectrum, from old standby to world beat. A superfine effort that really is 'relaxing.'

Great CD for relaxing. I found out about it from Amazon's recommendation. If you have to take steroids for medical reasons this will help relax you.

As both an oboist and a guitarist, I was quite impressed with the high level of musicianship displayed by these performers. This CD has a pleasant blend of acoustic sounds, nothing sounding synthesized or forced, with a style that for me is highly relaxing. These are obviously two talented composers and performers, playing music for themselves that does not easily fit into a prescribed category. It doesn't get much better than that.
