Customer Reviews:
Historic but not particularly good.......2007-02-08
I'm a long time Moog player and was hoping this cd was a bit more inspirational but I found it very generic.
More interesting than the samples.......2006-02-23
I bought this album mostly for the Moog Cookbook track. I've seen the documentary and it's interesting, but certainly not the best documentary I've ever seen. I was left with more questions than anything. However, as I was listening to the soundtrack, I was really struck by the talent assembled for the project and the versatility of the instrument. Most of the music is more ambient/breakbeat which is where the Moog really shines these days. "Micro Melodies", "The Sentinel", and "Variation One" are great places to start.
The "hits" disc wasn't as interesting, but a nice bonus. I thought the TMBG track of the Disneyland Electric Parade was inspired, worth the price of admission. I didn't know anyone could ever be so stoned that they could listen to an 18 minute Yes song, though.
A lot of these songs really need time to develop, which is why the samples are nice, but not enough to show why you should get the album. The instrument lends itself to further development in the song, so when you hear a 30 second clip, you're really only getting a very small piece.
Overall, a VERY interesting look at what's going on in music these days (even if it is an older disc) and how Moog is still a big part of it.
Soundtrack to the Documentary.......2005-06-02
I just purchased the Moog documentary on dvd as well as the soundtrack. The film is simply quite amazing and a must see for all fans of documentary films as well as music buffs in general. While watching the film the music caught my attention. Wall to wall original compositions made specifically for the film. All the great Moog bands of the modern age: Stereolab, Tortoise, Devo, Gary Numan, Yes, Roger from The Cure, etc. Great music to sit back and let your thoughts run wild. I left one star off for no Wendy Carlos or Stevie Wonder (although it is explained why in the Directors Commentary on the dvd).
Cool as Ice.......2005-01-10
Couldn't be a cooler soundtrack this year than Moog. Even if you aren't the biggest fan of synthesizer music (and I am not) this is still an amazing cd. Great songs by Bernie Worrell with Bootsy Collins on vocals and The Album Leaf. I also like the songs by Pete DeVriese and Money Mark (of the Beastie Boys). Really cool stuff. A bonus disc is also included (while not on the packaging) with all the great prog rock and new wave contributions of Moog synthesizer music.
Forward-Focused Vs. Ancient History.......2004-12-08
Those funky, warm sounds of the Moog synthesizer always make a mark. This soundtrack is really quite an accomplishment. Seems like the folks that put it all together didn't have some sort of agenda to put all the "moog masters" on there and the soundrack greatly benefits from it. They seemed to focus on artists who are making the most interesting sounds with the Moog at present, rather than toy around with ancient history. This record has some of the most amazing new electronic music being created today by the likes of Stereolab, Tortoise, Bernie Worrell and Bootsy Collins, and Roger O'Donnell. Newer artists really add something special with their contributions. I haven't heard of all the bands on this disc but I'm certain I will soon.
