Rediscover Your Spiritual Nature!.......2005-10-25
I was sitting in my four-door hardtop Hummer H1 Alpha, in the middle of Manhattan traffic, peering out over the massive hood down onto the smaller vehicles all around me, enveloped by the low rumbling of the 6.6 L V8, feeling very pleased with my dominance and the jealous looks of other people, when I saw the "Eagle River" CD my son had left on the passenger seat. Curious, I inserted the CD into my custom Blaupunkt Bremen car stereo and a plaintive guitar sang forth over the twelve-speaker system, followed by a melancholy Native American flute, all played over the background of a trickling stream and the twittering of birds.
I was born and raised in the city, and I've never had much use for the tree-hugging, granola-munching Nature lovers who are always forecasting gloom and doom, but after listening to a few tracks of "Eagle River," the minor-keyed and quasi-pentatonic melodies played with great sadness and humility on mostly harp, flute, and guitar over the sounds of a wild river in the Pacific Northwest, I began to feel less self-satisfied. A tinge of regret for the natural life I had exchanged for the concrete and steel of the city nipped at my conscience, and to my utter astonishment, I began to rethink some of my lifestyle choices.
I've worked hard for the things I've earned, and I've never apologized to anyone for exercising my right to get ahead. But repeated listening of "Eagle River" made me question the sustainability of consuming so much and what kind of world I would be leaving to my future grandchildren. I mean, sure, it's fun to live for the moment, accumulate more and more, and not give a second thought to either the future or anyone else, but "Eagle River" would not let me continue living without morals. Sure, I go to church. Heck, I'm even on the board and was made an honorary deacon. But that's all appearances. "Eagle River" awoke within me a true spiritual reawakening tied to Nature and my integral connection with it.
I sold that monstrosity of an SUV. I also sold my Manhattan condo, my stocks, my bonds, my ownership in various real estate holdings, and even my collection of early de Koonings. In fact, I sold every material possession I had and donated most of the proceeds to Greenpeace. I moved my family to the Pacific Northwest, bringing only basic tools, some clothes, and enough food to hold us over until we can build our cabin and become self-sustaining, living off the land as Nature intended. Things were rough at first: we were often cold, hungry, and wet. But the knowledge that we were returning to our roots and making new wildlife friends, especially the bears and wolves that have been making increased visits to our humble campsite, have made it all worthwhile. Our youngest even went out alone on a spiritual quest for self-discovery! At least, that's what we think happened.
