Buy this for the mesmerising title track.......2007-02-02

It's rare you experience a state of anticipation as intensely as with this album. The first track, the standard electronic pop tune I'll Find My Way Home, was a big hit in the early 1980s. Next comes State of Independence, a more complex song, and then comes a dip with Beside. The fourth track is The Mayflower, where Jon Anderson lets his vocals out to play for a while and the duo toss in some imagination.

Jon and Vangelis then move over into the land of musical magnificence with the title track, a small symphony which plays out over 12 minutes and nine seconds. It's based on the 1941 classic film "The Maltese Falcon" and starts off with the sound of bullets flying as our hero and his posse are under the gun and on the run. The effect is amusing, the music is imaginative, and then about seven minutes in it all changes and we move into a quietly mesmerising love song, one of the most beautifully constructed pieces of music I know. It ends like this:

Silent golden movies, talkies, technicolour, long ago
My younger ways stand clearer, clearer than my footprints
Stardom greats I've followed closely,
Closer than the nearest heartbeat
Longer than expected, they were great
Oh love oh love just to see them
Acting on the silver screen, oh my

I still listen to this often and then stop the CD. I don't want to hear any more, which means I don't think I've ever heard the last two songs.

Yes, if you like Yes you'll like this disc. This album is a very unique portrait painted by two very talented musicians who were at the top of their craft during this time. Jon has never sounded better and the combination with Vangelis is magical on this disc. Get a copy of this music immediately unless of course...you're allergic to good music.

Friends of Mr. Cairo~ Jon & Vangelis is a match made in heaven with Jons amazing vocals and Vangelis muisicianship. Jon Anderson is also a great lyricist and the track " I'll Find My Way Home" is one of the best songs that I have ever heard for its intricate yet not over the top lyrics. I honestly have no idea why this song did not become a number one on the charts since it certainly has all the right qualities for a hit song, splendid vocals, immense lyrics and awesome muisicianship. "The Friends Of Mr. Cairo" sounds like a sound of days gone by with a thematic story telling quality to it. The rest of the album remains with this high standarad and I would most definetely recommend it.

I was born only 2 years after this album was released and came across a copy of it (on cassette) from my step dad. He recommended it to me, noting its story telling qualities (Friends of Mr. Cairo) and thought I might like it for my lyrical ballet class. I'm hooked! So entertaining and smooth, I'll definitely use "Find my Way Home" for a recital piece next year.
