5 out of 5 stars A unique treat.......2001-07-09

Having grown listening to Okujava's songs, I again admire their beauty, sensitivity and wisdom thousands of miles from the place of their origin. Okujava's heart is as great as his gift for poetry and music. Highly recommended, with a plea for an English translation, which would aid reception and appreciation of his songs in non-Russian speaking listeners.

5 out of 5 stars Don Ata Ruso.......2001-05-16

I do not belong to the admirers of the so-called Russian "bardic song", to which according to many Okudzhava belongs. In fact, "new romance" or "bardic" folklore did not exist when he started performing his first songs in mid-fifties. I would rather describe his style as "Canto Nativo" (the term used by the Argentinean giant of the same genre Atahualpa Yupanqui). Instead of contributing to the "bardic" tradition, in my opinion Bulat Okudzhava have moved the centuries-old urban romance forwards at the moment when it became a museum art form. From this prospective he is "bigger" than any local cult singer/songwriter in Russia.

To many Muscovites his fame is a subject of jealousy, and they are absolutely certain that in order to like him you have to be born in their city and suffer your way through the turns and twists of its history. This is entirely understandable, since the poetry of his songs is filled with the names of the streets and other seemingly insignificant details (newsstands, trams, subway ads), in which he have discovered the poetry which many before could not find. But in my opinion this does not limit his audience only to his native city. Like in case with his literary cousin, already mentioned Don Ata (Atahualpa Yupanqui), you do not have to know exactly how the moon looks in Tucuman to recreate it in your mind as you listen to his songs, as long as you are open to the true poetry. Unfortunately there is one fundamental obstacle here: the language. You definitely have to understand Russian in order to appreciate Okudzhava's songs. But if you do (and you do not have to be a doc in slang or local dialects), you will be rewarded; the pure poetry of the city of Moscow will open to you from the previously unseen side in all its simple and subtle sophistication.
