Good Stuff..........2007-01-09

This guy is an awesome comedian; my sister introduced me to his material a couple weeks ago, and i was in so much pain from laughing nonstop. I agree with some of the other reviews on here, since I saw his video clips on youtube, and it does make a difference to see his expressions as he does his stuff, so that's why i put 4 out of 5. That, and his bit on mexican music is hilarious, or any bit where he makes his trumpet sound effects. If you like his stuff, then yeah, get a dvd of him live. The cd would be a good tie-over until you get tickets to see him in person. :P

Great comedy, like any great art, is great because it endures. George Carlin's material, for example, has endured for decades, and it will continue to endure; it will be as poignant fifty years from now as it is today.

The problem with the comics who do impressions---comics like Francisco---is that their material has a shelf-life of about twelve minutes. Sixty years ago, if you did a good impression of Humphrey Bogart, you'd probably get a lot of laughs. But today, the same impression would be met with blank stares.

The guy who does the movie preview voice today will not be the one who does them in the future, and likewise, in the future, that impression will have lost all its value, as no one will be familiar with the reference.

Look ahead to the future: a new comic, doing a new impression of the new movie preview guy, getting a lot of laughs. And Pablo Francisco? Nobody's ever heard of him. His act has vanished into the eternal dusts of time.

I have only heard clips from this CD but I know the problem. This CD was made a while back and his jokes are a bit better. BUT THE MAIN REASON YOU DONT WANT TO BUY THIS CD IS HE NEEDS TO BE SEEN. HIS COMEDY INTERLOCKS WITH VISUAL CUES AND LOOKS. ALTHOUGH YOU COULD LAUGH AT SOME OF HIS JOKES WITHOUT SOUND TOO. GET THE COMEDY CENTRAL DVD OR FORGET ABOUT IT. It's true, he needs new material. The 3 stars are b/c I know how funny he can be. Still one of my favorites. Good job last couple of years comedy central.

The Anti-Christ of Standup Comedy.......2005-12-30

Pablo Francisco is the antithesis of everything that a good comic should be. There are bad comics, comics that nobody laughs at, and these comics are tolerable because in watching them we know that they will soon give up comedy. Then there are comics like Francisco. When I watch or listen to Francisco, it is in stunned silence, in a kind of bewildered fury, as the surrounding audience bursts into uncontrolled bouts of laughter. And I sit and think to myself, WHY ARE YOU LAUGHING?! WHY ARE YOU ENCOURAGING THIS MAN?! HE NEEDS TO BE STOPPED! HE NEEDS TO BE RESTRAINED!!!

The impressionist school of comedy is filled in by people like Francisco, people who are not funny, but who have the ability to do uncanny impersonations. And impersonations are fine, as long as what you say is funny---but almost invariably the impressionist comics like Francisco manage to subsist on their impressions alone, coasting along without having to say anything remotely humorous. And the audience, like a group of trained sheep, seems, bafflingly, to be riveted at every turn, laughing their heads off, thinking, "Oh my gosh, he really sounds like that guy! What a great impression! Ha ha! I mean he REALLY sounds like him! That's funny!"
Pablo Francisco is the anti-Christ of standup comedy. Unsophisticated patrons of comedy may gobble Francisco's material up, but anyone with an actual senses of humor will simply wonder, "what is this junk?"

And there are plenty more on that list, this is just off the top of my head. These are genuinely talented comedians. Even some of the one-liner comics (i.e., Stephen Wright, Demetri Martin, Zach Galifiankis, Mitch Hedberg) can be quite funny. But for the love of everything god, Pablo Francisco is NOT. He just does good impressions. People, comedy is not a universal talent. Some people are funny, some people aren't. If someone isn't funny, DON'T LAUGH!!! BE MORE DISCRIMINATING WITH YOUR TASTES!!! THE FUTURE OF COMEDY DEPENDS ON IT!!!!!!!!!
