Customer Reviews:
Great Stuff.......2006-09-23
Few aggregations of comic talent have ever been as strong as Monty Python. This collection tries the impossible: combing through TV, movies and released recordings to find "the best." Python will be remembered as a result of this collection.
In some cases, bits lack context and thus are enjoyable largely because they call to mind the original fabric. This is especially true because the collection emphasizes musical performances, many of which are taken from the films. And understanding the film context makes the musical performance much funnier.
As others here have complained about the "holes" in this collection, I'll weight in with mine: "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" from "The Life of Brian." It was just too controversial, I guess.
Great stuff...
Great, But Not Complete (hence only 4 stars).......2006-01-31
This is a fairly decent compilation, but only with the six original British Charisma LPs in mind. That means, there is no material from "Monty Python's Flying Circus" (a 1970 album released on BBC Records and also on Pye Records); "Live at City Center" (a US only release from Arista Records in 1976) "The Life of Brian" (1979 soundtrack released on Warner Bros. Records); and "The Meaning of Life" (1983 soundtrack released on MCA Records). "Monty Python Sings" kind of makes up for these oversights, but a redone career-spanning compilation would be appreciated. Even the box set doesn't have all the material in one place (leaving out "City Center" and the BBC album). I would also include some material only available on the TV shows, and material from "And Now For Something Completely Different" (1971 feature); the two German shows (1972-1973); and material from "Monty Python Live at the Hollywood Bowl" (1981 feature). I would like to be "ripped off" from Monty Python again!
worth something in monty python like Meaning of Life .......2004-08-15
You will find a lot of Monty Python material that's kind of rare, but still cool. This is worth it with the Instant Record Collection.
Another Python compilation.......2004-07-14
If you're looking for the LIMITED new material on this album, like I did, you'll be disapointed, as there's maybe a total 2 minutes of new material, which is simply Micheal Palin, bantering about nothing.
If your looking for sketches that you haven't heard for a while, or at least not the Drury Lane versions then get this album. There is also a small booklet with new stuff, and pictures some of which I haven't seen anywhere else. It's not essential, but you can still have a nice time.
Classic Python Goodness.......2004-02-12
As a long-time Python fan, I jumped at this CD when I saw it at a pretty good price. It's loaded with nearly two hours of goodies on two discs -- tons of classic sketches, sound bits from the movies and the lot. The Spam song? It's here. The Lumberjack song? Got it. Sit On My Face? Fear not. The only notable absence is "Every Sperm is Sacred" from "The Meaning of Life," which would have been nice to have, but isn't a requirement for me to fully enjoy this CD, especially since we've got greats like the Parrot sketch and the cheese shop.
Just one caveat, though... what on Earth is that picture on the cover supposed to be? Ew. Gross.
