Customer Reviews:
Garbage.......2005-12-03
This CD stinks so bad that I bought a copy to send to my ex-wife. What a hack.
O&A Party Rock!!
That's not the way this review is supposed to start!.......2005-11-07
This is a very comprehensive compilation of Dickie Goodman's best material (80 minutes long). Unfortunately, some of the samples have been replaced by "sound alikes". And the sound quality isn't all that great either, with the songs being taken from old 45s, instead of the master tapes. It also gets kind of repetitive hearing so many "break-in" records in a row, although there are four songs here that aren't "break-in" records. Anyway, fans of novelty records will probably enjoy this CD.
Stay Away From This CD!!.......2002-12-16
If you're looking for the original versions of Top 40 hits such as "Super Fly Meets Shaft" or "Energy Crisis '74", BEWARE!!! Each of these (and perhaps others, I couldn't even listen to the entire CD) inserts re-recordings of certain of the break-in songs, performed by artists other than the original artists (e.g., the insert of "The Joker" into "Energy Crisis" is not The Steve Miller Band). This must explain why the title has been shortened, leaving off the "'74", because it's not the same track. It's also been edited severely from the original single.
If you're looking for the originals, try "King Of Novelty's Greatest Fables Vol. 2" - listening to the audio clips, it appears that the original versions have been used on this CD.
I hadn't known Goodman did this much material.......2001-07-23
Dickie Goodman began for me in the early Sixities when he did a parody of "The Untouchables" (original series/ Robert Stack). If you will recall, the series narrator was veteran radio newscaster Walter Winchell. Goodman parlayed the resemblance of his own voice to that of Winchell--as well as a good imitation of Winchell's rat-a-tat-tat phrasing, plus the addition of tiny snatches of current pop songs as part of the story--into a one-person genre of comedy that I think to this day remains the only example of a comedian having regular top-40 radio exposure. There are examples of single concepts being sequeled to death here, but how can you beat the following example from "Ben Crazy": Question from Goodman: "Where is Dr. Crazy?" Reply from Freddy Cannon: "Down at Palisades Park"? Or this one from "Berlin Top Ten": Goodman (as Soviet broadcaster) "The father of the little girl sends this dedication to his daughter somewhere in Siberia". Input from Bobby Vee: "Take good care of my bay-yay-bee"?
Classic material, pathetic CD.......2001-06-19
I've been a Dickie Goodman fan since childhood, and I eagerly awaited the first legitimate CD compilation of his material. Sad to say, this CD was a MAJOR disappointment. Every track on this disc is taken from a vinyl record--no master tapes here. To be fair, Goodman recorded for an endless succession of small, fly-by-night labels. When they went under, they probably took the masters with them. So, we're left with a stack of vinyl records. I can overlook that. What I CAN'T overlook is the hopelessly incompetent transfer of these records to CD. "The Flying Saucer" sounds muffled, even for a forty-five-year-old recording. Many mono tracks are well off-center. "Ben Crazy" begins halfway through the first word. "Harry's Jock Strap" is the censored version which appeared on a Dr. Demento compilation LP in the early '80s, and it is terribly distorted here, as is "Energy Crisis '74," identified on the CD jacket as "Energy Crisis." In fact, distortion is a problem to some degree on most of the tracks on this disc, as if the records or the record player's needle needed cleaning. This compilation was produced by Goodman's own son, which makes the sloppy presentation all the more unforgiveable.
