Customer Reviews:
The Good and The Ugly (with Dennis, there is no Bad).......2006-07-19
The Good: It has been forever since I heard this album and am glad I picked up a copy of it before it retired to OOP Land. This is back in the day when Dennis Miller was Dennis Miller; pre-"Rant", bi-partisan and hilarious. While he does use those obscure references, they aren't nearly as ecclectic as his use of them today. FIVE stars! In fact, you may be asking yourself if I gave him 5 stars, why did the product only receive four? Read on.
The Ugly:
Warner Bros, be ASHAMED. I don't know how much more you could of have screwed up this album. First off, the CD contains 2 tracks. All they did was take the cassette tape and transferred it to CD format. Forget about skipping to a particular area in his performance; you're stuck holding the Fast Forward button.
But here's where this steaming pile really shines. The entire albulm is in left channel only! Who does your mastering, a fourth-grader? Wow, Warner, you didn't just dropped the ball, you passed it to the opposing team. Thankfully, I'm technically knowledgeable enough to fix this myself. But why should I have to? Caveat Emptor.
Come on--five stars at any convention.......2005-08-15
Please...neither American political party is worth a flinged booger... but the OFF WHITE ALBUM is, and then some... this work of art snuck Miller into the class of George Carlin and Richard Pryor, with Sam Kinnison and Eddie Murphey sliding in as well (Sam's entry into this zone by virtue of one single LOUDER THAN HELL effort and Eddie could have retired after RAW--and possibly should have). Although it is clear that Pryor and Carlin's greatness becomes multiplied by their prolific output each, Dennis remains no slouch. He has also developed a prideful body of work--but nothing that comes close to harking back to his atom bomb--the Thor's hammer of comedy--THE OFF WHITE ALBUM. His rants about the deep south linger like the palate of a fine port. As for Sam, R.I.P., dude--oh OOOOOOH! Still waiting on Chris Rock's masterpiece, but I think he's close. As for the players from Lenny Bruce on back to Vaudeville, that's an argument of era and style better saved for another time, but frankly, I do not recall the need to gasp for air from hearing Henny Youngman one-liners. In the case of Bruce--he's remembered more for being censored than for being funny. I'll take Michael Winslow's grotesque noises or even some perfectly-timed Steven Wright dead pan genius before that ancient stuff, bless their souls. Although Don Rickles had his moments and Myron Cohen's genius was pretty subtle. Also, I am sure Bill Cosby, who is a unique genius, affected more than just Seinfeld. I have to give an honorable mention to that filthy vile freak, Andy Silverstein from NE Philly, er...Andrew Dice Clay from Brooklyn--his 15 minutes of fame floored me into critical condition, viz a viz any episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm, but that guy flamed hard. I saw him at a small club in Boston in 1994. The unknown opening act was the peak of the evening. Speaking of Curb Your Enthusiasm, Richard Lewis is an underrated comic, but I am still waiting for his masterpiece too. Shouts out to Rodney Dangerfield, David White, Andy Kaufman, Richard Belzer, Josh Brewster, Steve Martin, Christopher Lloyd, Jim Carey, Foster (hiccup) Brooks, Bernard Fox, Red Skelton, Jack Martling, Larry Miller, Gary Shandling, Dick York, Cheech Marin, Yakov Smirnoff, Eugene Levy, Victor Borge, Leon Askin, John Valby, Jerry Seinfeld, Strom Thurmond, Thomas Chong, Howard Caine, and Robin Williams. Aren't there any funny chicks? Maybe Phyllus Diller, Marion Lorne, Agnes Moorehead, and Ruth Buzzy.
Funny As Hell!.......2004-10-31
It's funny how the liberal democrats have got so desperate, they have chosen to grade Dennis Miller's CD on the basis he now has educated himself on the fact liberals could damage this country with there wishy-washy attitude on our security. To quote Dennis, he said "I stopped being a liberal when I got to the point where I wasn't sure about my guesswork." Great line! This is a hilarious CD no matter who he supports. Dennis rules!
Classic Dennis Miller - and his best work yet!.......2004-06-02
This 1988 album featuring the wise-guy, smart aleck Dennis Miller is much better than the Rants series, which was spiraling downhill to most people before 'The Rant Zone' in 2001 showed some new promise. Recorded during his SNL days, the crisp delivery and well timed humor of Dennis is perfect here. I wish he would have recorded more albums in the stand up format rather than books on tape that don't have an audience. It makes the listener enjoy the comedy much more. The album sound itself is mixed beautifully and deserves an A+, since many stand up comedy records seem to have to crowd louder than the performer.
If you like Dennis Miller, get this album. Some of the material is a bit dated but it definitely stands up over time and does not make it suffer due to Miller's excellent style.
The CD is only two tracks long, and this is a result of many late 80s CDs not yet being sophisticated to break down a comedy record into multiple topic tracks like they do now. Not a big deal though. It makes you remember the "Side A/B" from the cassette it was originally released on!
5/5 stars.
The Previous Reviewer.......2004-01-27
I'm rating this CD 5 stars simply based on the apparent fact that the previous reviewer seems to have defied the laws of physics by crawling up his own ass. Dennis Miller is hilarious, whether attacking right-wing idealogues, stewardesses, pompous celebrities, or, hell, even left-wing facists (like the previous reviewer) who think comedians are funny only if they toe the liberal line.
