5 out of 5 stars jammin' in new york..........2006-01-06

George Carlin. I can't believe I've gone this long without listening to his material. Then again, I'm only 18. "Jammin' In New York" is great, funny, hilarious. I especially love his take on flying ("`Put the mask over your face and breath deeply'. Sure, I have no problem with that. I always breathe normally when I'm in a six-hundred mile an hour uncontrolled vertical dive") and experiences that bring us together ("You ever been talking to yourself and someone comes into the room and you have to make believe you were singing?"). It's coarse and it's fun.

Also check out Complaints and Grievances, You Are All Diseased, and Parental Advisory.

5 out of 5 stars Another Carlin Masterpiece.......2003-05-25

Whether you see his performances on tape or DVD or if you listen to his material on CD, George Carlin is always on top of his game. He talks about whatever he wants without any fear, and he doesn't care who he offends. (In fact, if you ever told him that you were offended by his stuff, it'd only encourage him!) George Carlin's "Jammin' in New York" is a hilarious album that always keeps you on your toes.

On this dark and angry album you'll hear George talk about the Gulf War, little things we have in common, golf courses, airline announcements, eating disorders, more war stuff, environmentalists, and many more.

This is one of my favorite performances by him. He hits every note right and never leaves us with a dull or unfunny moment. Carlin dishes out the edgy and controversial material without hesitation. And it's also an album you can listen to over and over again. If you're easily offended by strong language, I'd recommend that you steer clear of this one. After all, this is Carlin we are talking about.

While seeing him do his performances is always better than just listening to it, "Jammin' in New York" is definitely an album to check out if you are a Carlin fan. His years in comedy really pays off and you do get the feeling that he seems to improve with every performance. Carlin will always remain a favorite of mine.

5 out of 5 stars There may never be another George Carlin album like it........2002-12-17

I was never really into to stand up comedy until I was introduced to George Carlin. I have heard a lot of his stuff, but Jammin' in New York is, by far, the greatest and most well thought out poece of his work yet to date. It is one of the funniest HBO performances that he has ever done.

4 out of 5 stars This man is not an "audioevangelist"..........2002-08-15

...you have to remember that. Evangelists tend to be voices of religions where it is expected to take every word of Scripture as the literal word of the Almighty. And when they preach, you're supposed to believe it all. I don't care what your attitudes and worldviews are--listen to just one Carlin disc and you are more than once going to hear somthing you strongly disagree with. That's because he's a humorist--part comedian and part philosopher--never completely one or the other. Carlin tends to knock government and the Church. Well, it's fashionable to strongly distrust government nowadays. And church congregations are shrinking and it's getting tougher every day to find "people of God". I could care less how trendy it is to use "government" as a four-letter word (GOVT)--any society needs government as a counterbalance to chaos. And belief in a god is a help to that. Why can't people just do as they like? Because some people like to do some pretty lousy things and it's naiive to claim they're never going to harm anyone else. I'm a churchgoer who votes rather than distorting Jefferson on the topic of overthrowing my government. You gonna call me naiive and a yes-man? I don't care--knock yourself out. Carlin takes a moderate advocacy stance on drugs. The problem with dope is that it's a "me" experience and it tends to create self-centered people. Not "free" people, self-centered. You got some creep that doesn't care about anyone else, when you meet him, he ain't gonna care about YOU. Political correctness? It would be awfully nice to think that there can be a basic plan in which people don't say rotten things to each other, but it's contrary to human nature. One of the earliest forms of human interaction is kids calling each other names, and we never 100% outgrow it. And those same kids who just might be better than average in outgrowing it are not going to succeed in force-evolving the rest of society. Like I said--human nature. I guess what it all boils down to is that when you listen to Carlin, don't expect to hear what you like as if he were an ideal political candidate. They ain't no sech animule. Anyone who seems like they are is manipulating you. If people would only realize that, there would be a lot fewer so-called "libertarians" who are really nothing but anarchists. If you don't like the incumbent, vote for the other guy. If you don't like an entertainer, there are other entertainers. But never, NEVER expect a "perfect 10"--ALWAYS take him at face value. That's why God invented cheering and booing--the same people do both at different points in the same performance. Carlin is brilliant sometimes and a real jerk some other times. It's best to allow for both eventualities. Like the glass that's either half empty or half full. What do they have in common? Both have water in them. That's what makes a Carlin album worth the price posted on this page.

5 out of 5 stars Good One George.......2002-06-10

It may be ten years old now, but I thought that this was good stuff by Carlin - still relevant today.

It might be that I felt that this CD was so good because I bought it after I bought "You Are All Diseased" (which I thought was over-the-top and far too "angry" in places). Here, Carlin's satire is still sharp and well-observed. Of particular delight to me were the pieces on in-flight airline announcements, and (being a non-golfer) his take on how to make better use of the land taken up by golf courses.

I'm glad I bought it (and paid Amazon the Transatlantic shipment costs!)
