Customer Reviews:
South American Boleros.......2006-04-05
Chilean master crooner of the bolero Lucho Gatica was very popular in Latin America during the fifties and sixties but unfortunately his popularity has waned with the passing of time. If you like such contemporary artists in this genre has Alejandro Fernandez, Pablo Montero or Luis Miguel you probably will like this vintage version of romantic music. This particular CD is probably not as good as Vol.l only because of the choice of songs which are not as well known. Gatica, whose popularity sold millions in his era, has a distinct voice that is suited for the bolero. His timbre is a soft tenor (similar to Julio Iglesias) and his vocal phasing is never overextended, it is about as mellow as you can get. His voice would be perfect for a trio like in groups like Los Panchos. There is a minimilst quality to his voice that suits the romantic bolero and most of the songs have soft guitar or piano but some do have full orchestration. It is the dreamy kind of music for quite evenings or rainy days to spend with that special someone and share a cozy firepace with. I never listened to Gatica until the recent passing of my querida mother who I recall adored his music. The tracks are all very similar with hardly a distinguishing quality with the exception of the religious song "Ave Maria" which is sung in Latin and where his vocal range is pleasantly pushed to the limit. All the other songs are in Spanish. Exceptional songs are "La Mentira" that has that has that pleasantly surprised walking into a late night exclusive dinner club feel to it, the beautiful Agustin Lara and often recorded composition "Noche de Ronda" is interpreted with fitting elegance and grace, "Te Amare Toda La Vida" is more modern sounding with a full jazzy band sound similar to the style Luis Miguel has recorded with that gently swings, "Sera" has a cocktail lounge feel to it and also a bit jazzy, "Tu que Me Das" has a kooky girl chorus over a jazzy mambo beat with a sixties spy movie flair to it that a DJ mixer could do wonders with and the lush "Tu Me Acostumbraste" is a perfect romantic interlude for the unfamiliar with Lucho Gaticas music. Most of the songs are in the three minute range and all ballads. Recommended if you'd like to discover some old new music. Lucho Gatica deserves more contemporary recognition, his influence is evident in many of todays boleros, check him out.
