Customer Reviews:
Not quite up to "Per Amore" but still worth the money.......2001-03-15
Zizi Possi tackles some of the BIG Napolitan tunes that Italian tenors have been belting out for years - "Core'ngrato", "Malafemmena", "Torna a Surriento" and the title tune. Although hers is a lovely voice, it proves a little fragile for this sort of fare and the rather anemic orchestral arrangements don't help. Still, there is a lot to recommend here. The disc begins with the beautiful love song from "La Strada", there is a touching duet with fellow Brazilian Chico Barque on the old favorite "Anema e core", and there's even a quirky little comic turn in a song that appears to be about a troublesome mother-in-law. (Sorry, I don't speak the language but I do appreciate that it is in the authentic dialect!) All said, it's really not fair for me to fault an artist who has never been concerned with catering to prevailing public tastes. This project was obviously a labor of love for Zizi. Brava for such a noble effort!
italian music/brazilian style.......1999-08-20
As an Italian, I would like to clarify that the majority of songs on this album are NOT traditional folk songs -- as one of the earlier comments suggests. For the most part, these are reinterpretations of successful ballads from a golden age in Italian pop music: the 1960s. However, some of them are much more recent and include an Eros Ramazzotti song which was written in honor of his daughter. In any case, the music is simple, dignified and evocative. Possi is paying tribute to her Italian roots by singing this Italian songbook: she is proud of her ancestry and proud too of her Brazilian musical world: many of the songs are slightly redefined by the added touch of a bossa nova rhythm or spare guitar work typical more of Gilberto than of Italian arrangements. The album is a continuation of the work she inaugurated with Per Amore (a song originally performed by Andrea Bocelli). That album seemed a bit more consistent...but they are both interesting, both wonderful. And perfect for a romantic evening of nostalgia and remembering.
Simple IS best.......1999-08-15
I heard this album first on Tom Schnabel's Cafe L.A. on KCRW in L.A., and had to track it down. Although I wish I could come up with more orginal words than "haunting" and "evocative," this album of traditional folksongs is just that. Some of the songs are familiar, and some aren't. Zizi's voice is beautiful in its understatment, which isn't the backhanded compliment it might sound like. The current trend of psychobabble talks about simplifying your life and getting back to basics: this album shows that they might, in fact, be on to something. I wish I could tell you what I gleaned from the liner notes (which includes all the lyrics), but alas it's an import and I don't speak Italian.
