4 out of 5 stars As seen on TV.......2003-03-21

This is a pretty nice collection of familiar Jose Alfredo Jimenez songs but there are no "uncovered gems" here. What differentiates and makes this disc unique in the extensive El Rey discography is La Banda Sinolense El Recodo. Although not clearly stated, it seems the remastering credit is a license to merge these two musical giants into one sound as though it were recorded as such. In any event the results are at times stunning. The addition of the omp-pah-pah -polkaesque horns makes for some great music as they lend a different texture to the great voice and songs of El Rey. The Banda echoes the musical refrains with lingering and accentuated horns and a constant drum that highly compliment El Rey. The combination is a nice merger of styles although quite different from the traditional mariachi backing used on most of El Rey's recordings. All the tracks are good but some of the best are the meloncholoy "La Mano De Dios, the philosophical "Cuatro Caminos," the gut wrenching "Yo-Ella" and the heartbreaker "Tu Y Las Nubes." To get the full effect this disc is best listened to at full volume so you can really feel the throbing thump-thump, remastered, modern new/old sound. Naturally and clearly though the star is the masterful and soulful singing of Jose Alfredo. Unlike some Jose Alfredo recordings where the sound quality is not so great the remastering by Miami Tape results in some music with depth. Twelve classic great songs preformed in Banda style await the listener. If you are a fan of El Rey or Banda you are going to love this combination.
