3 out of 5 stars Omelete Ertegun.......2001-11-02

Wow, this is one crazy album. The best songs sound like Nilsson or Lennon after learning a few new chords from some old Jobim records. As with his previous solo work, "Alfagamabetízado," Brown just tries to cram too much into one CD. This is a self-conscious attempt at pop esperanto and as such an honorable effort. "Cold Heart" is a beautiful song and very Lennonesque indeed. In this respect, Brown continues the MPB tradition of ripping off the Beatles that his progenitor Gilberto Gil displayed so much talent for on "Domingo No Parque" back in 1968. Curiously enough, I find the more "Brazilian" rhythmic experiments quite uninteresting; Brown's talent seems to be for, uhmm, creative appropriation in the grand old Tropicalist manner. If you like Brown, I would suggest you obtain a copy of Sergio Mendes's classic "Brasileiro" from 1992, to which Brown contributes some fine songs. It's one of the best Brazilian albums ever. Just think what Carlinhos Brown could do with some savvy and adventurous American power-pop producer. Send this man on over to Nashville or Memphis.

3 out of 5 stars un album de transicion.......2001-05-31

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as Alfagamabetizado.......2001-01-04

This album is "less brazilian" than it's predecesor but it's cool. I recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD on its own.......2000-06-15

This is a great CD on its own merits. Although not the classic that "Alfagamabetizado" was, it's also not the same beast. This time, Carlinhos used more orchestration, pop sensibilities and less tribal percussion. Overall, I'd have to say the production was much nicer on "Alfa", but this CD has many bright spots. As far as the polyglot references, I'd have to say Caetano, Gil and Tom Zé have also been guilty of this, although not to the oddball extreme of Carlinhos. Despite his strange word-wranglings, Carlinhos is a strong lyricist with inventive, off-the-beaten-path ideas.

5 out of 5 stars Brazilian Love Affair.......2000-05-22

Carlinhos Brown is a musical genius, inventive, innovative, capturing the imagination and stirring the soul. My love affair with him continues and I look forward to hearing more of this remarkable musician. Buy it, you'll like it.
