5 out of 5 stars Julie V. -- Jazzily Spiritual.......2001-01-21

Julie V. is a jazz songstress who, in conversation, repeatedly emphasizes that jazz singing is an art form. All art forms require discipline and a dedication to craft, and both of these requirements are fulfilled abundantly every time Julie V. steps onto a stage. She has recently, very successfully, stepped onto the stage at Andy's, the prestigious Chicago jazz club, as well as many Northwest Indiana musical haunts.

On her debut CD, Something New, she has employed several top-shelf Chicago area musicians, including Bernard Scavella, who co-wrote the excellent title track with Julie. Scavella is a saxophonist with instrumental soul to burn, and he takes every song on which he plays just a little bit higher. In fact, it sounds as if all the players on the disc did their best and most heartfelt playing for Julie.

The songs she chooses to cover display the many facets of her personality and singing style. A standout is "My Funn(k)y Valentine," which possesses a musical arrangement and vocal intensity rarely found in the many past versions of this standard. Another highlight, "Peel Me a Grape," has a playful, slightly flirtatious quality about it. However, it also reflects a certain weariness -- that of a woman who is seeking a little relaxation after another exhausting day struggling in a male dominated world.

As Julie develops as a singer and, hopefully, songwriter, even more of her personality will come through the music she produces. I should perhaps mention the most important aspect of Julie V.'s work and personality, and that is a very real spirituality. This spirituality deeply affects those who attend her shows. Members of a Julie V. audience don't leave one of her shows thinking the same thoughts with which they came in. If a performer can touch an audience's spirit like she can, that performer will not wear thin easily. If anything, she will only become more sought after.

We'll be hearing more about Julie V. in the not-too-distant future. In the meantime, however, we should enjoy this present. I highly encourage you who are reading this to live a little dangerously. Take a risk. Try Something New.
