Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great guitar player.......2000-11-14

Of course Kenny Burrell doesn't exactly personify Piano Jazz, but nevertheless this dalliance into six string jazz is certainly a welcome one. Kenny actually does play piano on one song, but for the majority of the show he plays guitar (both electric and acoustic). In addition to the musicians he's worked with over the years, Burrell also discusses such things as initially wanting to play the saxophone but having to settle for the guitar due to the high cost of metal instruments during the war years. Fortunately the inspired playing of Charlie Christian motivated him to explore the guitar's potential. When Marian asks him if it's difficult to play the way he does Burrell says that playing sophisticated jazz harmonies can get complicated, but the great thing about the guitar is that you can play literally hundreds of songs with only four chords. Unfortunately Marian uses this as an opening to display her well known snobby contempt for rock music. Fortunately the subject is changed before it gets out of hand. The interaction of the piano and guitar sets this episode apart from the others in the series and adds some pleasant variety.
