Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars If you never listen to Holdsworth again...listen to this!.......2004-05-22

The guitar mastery of Allan Holdsworth has become more in recent times the stuff of legend, and as well, his recordings (long underrated and unheard in the U.S.)have become all the more sought after. While babes of the fifties, sixties, and seventies were chomping on the latest riffs from Page, Hendrix, or any other number of mainstreamers, Allan quietly but diligently developed and plied his craft on less recognizeable projects. Still, the evidence of his considerable talent, as well as that of sometimes experimental jazz pianist Gordon Beck, is plain on "The Things You See". The acoustic work will be a suprise to already initiated fans of Holdsworth's electric and synthaxe releases, really driving home the fact that, "yes, he is really playing that thing, and there are no tricks." The one caveat perhaps is that some of the compositions tend to be all at once a little self-indulgent, more reminiscient of the free-forms that Beck layed down in the sixties with the Gordon Beck Trio. Both trade disonant flurries on their respective instruments, sometimes mesmerizing, sometimes a little "wish this riff would end" kinda stuff. But there are enough specific phrase and theme elements to hold ones attention overall. Even a serious groove or two, like that on "She's Lookin', I'm Cookin" and "Up Country". If you are new to AH's music, buy this album, even if you have to buy it used. After that, buy "None Too Soon" and "Wardenclyffe Tower"if you can find them. Enjoy!!
