Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A visitor to The Island.......2001-03-05

The Island is a very good jazz CD. Footprints is a well-balanced group, with solid musicianship both in solos and in ensemble. They are good, but not exceptional. What makes The Island a CD one everyone should at least listen to, however, is the vocalist -- Joan Carroll. She has a magnificent voice, and knows how to pay tribute to a lyricist. Her work on Blackberry Winter is brilliant. Buy this CD; help jazz stay alive. And go listen to Footprints live -- Joan is even better in person.

5 out of 5 stars Step back to another time and place.......2000-05-29

There are few works that seem to transport you to another time and place musically. Joan and her band have been able to provide the path to another time when jazz was the best way to share or understand emotions. From the first song, you are in a late hours of the evening, taking stock of the day. Joan spans a broad emotional range, and her musical backup seems to step in at all the right times. If you want to listen to a mature work of jazz, this is it.

5 out of 5 stars A welcome CD to any house.......2000-03-14

The Island by Footprints is a wonderful collection of jazz tunes performed by a group whose instruments and vocalist are highlighted in their talents. It is a perfect blend. The songs chosen for this CD show the talents of the performers and are purely enjoyable tunes for the listener. My favorites include Four, Morning, and Rio de Janeiro Blue. This is a very enjoyable CD. The vocals are entrancing in the way one can get caught up in a great movie. I find myself wanting more.

5 out of 5 stars Island.......2000-02-01

I first heard this album on saturday, Jan. 29 on our local jazz station KSYM. I was listening with great interest, trying to recognize the vocalist, but could not. When the music stopped, and the DJ began talking to the artist, Joan Carroll, I discovered that she and her group were local talent. Well, I just could not believe it. They are so good! I bought the album that same afternoon, and I listen to it constantly. I believe the only thing they lack is national exposure. I would surely like to hear more from them, and I also believe they owe it to all of us who love beautiful music.
