Customer Reviews:
In The Moody.......2005-05-05
Hats off to Verve for continually culling their vast vaults and re-releasing long out-of-print classic jazz albums. Recently this effort has centered around a bunch of old Argo LPs, including this one by multi-instrumentalist James Moody. This self-titled effort is actually the first album of his as a leader that I've ever purchased and been happy with, as several of his OJC titles never quite did it for me. However, this August 1959 session is rather enjoyable. The CD features a septet of unheralded players, only one of which I've ever heard of before aside from Moody, and that is the brilliant trumpeter Johnny Coles (see my reviews of his Blue Note album "Little Johnny C" and Epic session "The Warm Sound"). The rest of the band is Tom McIntosh on trombone, Musa Kaleem on baritone sax, Gene Kee on piano, John Latham on bass, and Clarence Johnston on drums. The album features four standards, two Gene Kee originals -- "Cookie" and "R.B.Q." -- and one Moody tune, the opener "Darben the Redd Foxx." The spotlight also shines on McIntosh, who provided the frontline arrangements for the standards and penned "With Malice Towards None." Moody performs mostly on flute, but joins in on alto and tenor saxophone on a few numbers. If you are interested in this CD, please be aware that this limited edition title will only be available until June 2007.
