Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Monk Fans Need This!.......2004-05-04

I picked this up because it looked like an interesting combination of players. It's the evening session of a tribute concert from around 1981 featuring Steve Lacy and Charlie Rouse on sax, and various pianists. For this record it's Anthony Davis and Mal Waldron. There are a couple of duets between Waldron and Lacy which are absolutely great, as well as solos by both Davis (Monk's Mood) and Waldron (Round Midnight). Not everything works completely. Don Cherry plays and is a bit "ahead" of the rest of the gang. But it's a great event and some really nice playing of Monk's music. VOl. 1 is the afternoon concert with Muhal Abrams.
