Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite players at her best.......2004-04-07

This is one of my favorite McPartland recordings, featuring Marian near the top of her game.

Her playing is inventive and complex, and the interaction between her and the rhythm section is delightful. I find this to be one of the most impressive McPartland trios on record. Steve LaSpina is a top-tier bassist (a requirement, it seems, to land a gig with McPartland), and Michael DiPasqua has some serious chops that he uses to embellish beautifully without being overbearing. I have always been disappointed that this trio - as far as I know - only made this one album.

The performances run the gamut from Marian's hard-driving solo on "Surrey", and aggressive runs at "Like Someone In Love" and "Giant Steps"; to pieces like "Ill Wind", "Crystal Silence", Marian's "Delicate Balance", and others, which demonstrate why there is virtually no one else I would rather hear take ballads to the piano.

The disc features a pair of additional tracks not included on the original vinyl: "All The Things You Are" which allows Marian to spotlight some of her classical training, and "Skylark", which is right in Marian's wheelhouse as one of the all-time great balladeers.

A marvelous live date, and highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Good live date from 1979.......2000-03-19

This recording was originally issued on Marian's Halcyon label. The reissue includes two extra tracks, both of which are worth hearing. "All the Things You Are" features Marian's J.S. Bach-influenced beginning and ending that she often plays in concert (and on "Gone with the Wind," too), and it's the only recorded version that I know about. "Skylark" shows Marian at her best as a ballad player.

The disk includes her best version of "Like Someone in Love" (also heard on the import "At the London House" disk and on "Live at Yoshi's Nitespot"). The remaining repertoire is typically adventurous: Chick Corea's "Crystal Silence," John Coltrane's "Giant Steps" and her own "A Delicate Balance."

Be aware that there is an audible flaw in the master on "Crystal Silence" (at least on my copy) and that each track fades at the end, which somewhat compromises the sense that you are listening to a live recording.

In short, this is probably among the second tier of McPartland's recordings, but it's the one I pull off the shelf when I want to hear "Like Someone in Love" and "All the Things You Are."
