4 out of 5 stars John Mc Laughlin - matchless acoustic guitarist.......2003-09-03

John McLaughlin is such a great musician. Anything he records or does is worth checking out, and he is absolutely definitely a 5-star musician. This is a really nice album, but it's not a 5-star album. It has some exquisite moments, but I feel it's let down by two things: 1) Some very corny, very dated-sounding electronic keyboards, and 2) A strange mix, or at least an odd sound to the overall mix.

This was a period of great music-making for John McLaughlin, and his playing is wonderous. I wish the electronics could be wiped off this album and it be rereleased! Sometimes the music is almost buried underneath too much muddy electronic sound. (And maybe poor mixing?) John's own beautiful acoustic guitar work is like a breath of fresh air by comparison.

Other reviewers have pointed out the beauty of some of John's compositions on the album. 'David', for instance is a true gem. It was also done (really well) as a great guitar trio track (as was 'Aspan') on the 'Passion, Grace, and Fire' album by John, Paco Di Lucia, and Al Di Meola. It also became the theme for the lovely second movement of John's 'Mediterannean' Concerto.

One extra point of interest for me that I must mention, is that this album has a wonderful cover. It's a fitting statement to John's artistic integrity. He is holding a square peg that is obviously not going to go into that round hole in the board in front of him! "Music Spoken Here" indeed! What a magnificent record cover!

5 out of 5 stars odd in a good way.......2001-01-27

this is an odd album... sounds like early mahavishnu without the blunt heaviness, shakti without the indian touches, his fusion without the crowded busyness. ( tho i like all those aspects as well...) the ingredients here-chiefly acoustic guitar, 2 keyboardists, and 'in the distance' bass & drums probably has something to do with it all. the whole cd reels like a european version of the 'great cohesive ensemble feel' that mr. mclaughlin achives with 'shakti'. very nice.

5 out of 5 stars Do you think acoustic guitar is limited? Listen and think .........2000-09-04

Do you think acoustic guitar is limited? Listen and think about it.

After "Belo Horizonte" John McLaughlin and his outstanding musicians decide to Speak Music, in a more mature approach than the previous one.

Want to be touched to tears?, Just listen with your open Heart to "David", and you'll be amazed by John's awesome skills. Listen to this song and you can cay "Only John [McLaughlin] is the human being who can share LIKE THIS his gift with the rest of us!".

If this is not enough for you to BUY this CD, let me tell you that French Pianist Virtuoso: Katia Labýque also plays here in a beautiful duet: "Brise de Coeur", you should don't miss for no reason in the world!.

one of his very best compilations and new releases that we can't hear easily here in Perý

5 out of 5 stars Music spoken Here... the eloquence of John Mclauglin.......1999-12-14

The mastery and brilliance that has defined John Mclaughlin's career, is evident with radiant clarity in music spoken here. McLaughlin's technical wizardry is astounding on this recording, but also his heart and soul. Music is his language, and his musical vocabulary, fluency and eloquence, are without equal. The most notable tracks are David, which showcase his incredible technique, Negative ions, Aspan, and the incredible Brise De Coeur. The weight and descriptive ability of my meager words do not do this recording justice.

Listen....hear...feel.... as only music can make you... music spoken here
