Customer Reviews:
one of the best.......2006-08-11
I bought this album mainly for three songs: "East River Drive," "I'm Home Africa," and "Theme from Boyz N the Hood." I knew that those were the ones that I wanted, because I heard them in other places, like pre-recorded audio cassettes, and thought that it would be fun listening to them over and over thanks to CD players. However, there are other ones here that make this a worthwhile purchase, like "Never Loose Your Heart/There Lies the Passion" and "Christmas in Rio."
The KAB score: 10 perfect!
Lord of the Low Frequencies.......2003-03-08
Not many people can step out and make the bass the front instrument, but Stanley Clarke sure can. Clarke composes most of his songs with a smooth jazz feel that builds around the bass like many musicians build their music around a guitar, trumpet or sax. His unique style of snapping the strings against the fretboard gives him his signature sound. Although there is no "School Days" track on this album, it is a good listen, smooth.
"East River Drive" shows off Clarke's smooth jazz composing abilities. His bass leads us through the song with a good solo by George Howard on sax. The other extreme is "Funk Is Its Own Reward" where Clarke gets, well, funky. His long time collaborator, George Duke, sits in for this upbeat tune. This should get your feet taping with a cool groove, and some impressive string snapping, slapping and sliding. "I'm Home Africa" is another upbeat tune, with a great solo from saxophonist Doug Webb. Clarke can really romance it up with slow tunes as well like, "What If I Forget the Champagne". And the tunes "Illegal" and "Lords of the Low Frequencies" are a base workout.
Ever since I saw Clarke perform "School Days" with Larry Coryell on guitar, he has been one of my favorites. He has helped move me over into the Jazz world with his incredible musicianship. This album, like "Hideaway", is smoother than his stuff from the seventies. It's still a great album, with great playing, just a little different. It still doesn't top my favorite album by him, "Stanley Clarke and Friends, Live at the Greek" with Larry Carlton, Billy Cobham, Deron Johnson, and Najee.
Smooth Pop.......2003-01-30
It's and excellent chill and groove record at the same time. Somewhere between the awesome "If This Bass Could only talk" and the Clarke/Duke project records.
Clarke takes you on a beautiful "Drive.".......2002-02-24
I had bought this recording in 1993 when it was first released. I had been searching for this on CD and finally found it in a used rack at a local music store. One man's loss is another man's gain! What a treasure this CD is. I had forgotten what a great recording this is. Clarke blows you away from the first baseline on the first track, Justice's Groove (The theme from the movie "Poetic Justice")and takes you on a smooth Jazz ride through all 12 tracks. If you don't already know it, you'll see playing this CD why Clarke is one of the best bass players in the world. With help from old friend George Duke, Jon Luc Ponty and other jazz greats this CD is a must have for Clarke fans and jazz fans a like. Check this Clarke treasure out.
Nothin' but the bass-ics!.......1999-12-03
Any jazz fan worth his/her salt should, at least, give this CD a listen. Bought it at a flea market-type sale and it's probably the best bargain in music I've ever bought. "Justice's Theme" is one of those tunes you may have heard in the past but didn't really know what it was. The late George Howard lending his sax to the title track is sensational. My favorite cut is theme to "Boyz In The Hood". Believe me, it's not what you may think. Also, "What If I Forget The Champagne" has a hint of Latin to it. I think the tune is great for those who want to get closer than close. "Christmas in Rio" is inspirational. The tribute to Cesar Chavez is great. This CD should've gotten more airplay. Everyone who's listened to my copy wanted my copy (naturally, I told them to buy their own copy). This is a can't miss CD.
