Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Bailey proves he's the greatest as Benny Goodman said........2005-08-18

If after hearing Buster Bailey play, "Man with a horn goes berserk," you don't agree with Benny Goodman, who knew him and who was taught how to play the clarinet by the same teacher, that Buster was the greatest clarinetist who ever lived, then you are probably not in a position to give an opinion on the art of clarinet playing in the first place.

Buster recorded that particular piece to prove to the world that he was better at clarinet playing than his fellow players. Being a black man, it was almost impossible during his era, to get the proper exposure on the radio and in films, to prove to the public that he was the true king of the clarinet...

Being a jazz clarinetist myself, I will always favor Benny Goodman's style and ability to play "swing," over any other clarinetist including Mr. Bailey. However, if it is sheer speed and technique that you are looking for in a jazz clarinetist, then look no further than Buster, or the fabulous Sidney Bechet for that matter.
