Customer Reviews:
Nice Collection; Identity Revealed ! 4.5 stars.......2007-02-21
I enjoy regular doses of Oscar's music and was trying to find the 2 CD set that the Penguin Guide raved about entitled "Piano Moods: The Very Best of Oscar Peterson." I could not find this exact Title, but this looked like the closest thing. Turns out these ARE one and the same, at least according to the information printed on the back of the CD case. Guess either the Penguin guys made a mistake with the full name or perhaps the name was changed on the newer release.
This is an enjoyable 33-Track compilation (made in England; probably explains why the Beatles "Yesterday" is included) of Verve recordings from the late 50s through early 70s, nicely re-mastered. It is weighted toward the slower, more thoughtful side of Peterson, rather than his more "invigorating" pyrotechnics. Lots of good stuff, although I was expecting more of the latter (there is some, though). The main reason I don't give this 5 stars is that there are 2 or 3 songs with rather syrupy orchestrated arrangements that I could do without (maybe these will grow on me--I'm nearly 50). The majority of the tunes are fine trio arrangements with piano, bass (usually Brown) and drums (usually Thigpen). No tracks from this period with guitarist Herb Ellis or Joe Pass (weren't these guys Definitive too??) The track listings in the liner notes were a bit odd, and you couldn't always tell who was playing on what song.
