Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Bobby Bradford & John Carter Live! What Could Be Better?.......2007-03-23

Plenty of eybrow raising music here, friends! It's amazing that these fine gentlemen can play such free music and make it sound as if it were composed! Of course, long time collaborators cornetist Bobby Bradford and clarinetist John Carter though stylistically different, seem to share the same musical mind and are very in tune with each other. The rhythm section, featuring Don Preston on piano and synthesizer, Richard Davis on bass, and Andrew Cyrille on drums are super slinky and elastic! They give each soloist their own specialized backing and never seem to be static. There seems to be as much listening going on here as there is playing. Every one of these musicians turn in jaw dropping solo's throughout this set and there are plenty of them in this 74 plus minute disc that was recorded at Catalina Bar and Grill in Hollywood, CA on May 29th, 1988. You will certainly dig the unique group sound that these gentlemen achieve.

The sound quality of the recording is superb and once again so is the playing. The tunes are all original, two by Bradford and three by Carter, some that can be found on their releases from the early 70's and yet, they sound very modern. The compositions are all very interesting and come off well with the exception of the only ballad, "Ode To the Flower Maiden". A much better version of that can be found on John Carter's "Dauhwe" cd. Finally, the liner notes of this disc are extensive and informative. This is an all time favorite in my very large cd collection. Live music at it's finest!
