I met George Petit in 1997 when I was working in Burlington, VT. Despite the fact that he didn't know me, he invited me to the release party of PATACHOU (even though I didn't have an official paper invitation). The band was mesmerizing, the music melodically hypnotic. Needless to say, I was impressed; I ran out and bought PATACHOU the next day.

George is a master jazz guitarist (and a gentleman to boot). His his style is fluid, and his soloing is very mature - he avoids the "noodling" that is the bane of most jazz musicians (a holdover from bee-bop). The solos are actually seen as development of the theme, rather than a boring technical display. Most jazz does nothing for me precisely because of this solo noodling; George's album is a welcome releif from the wateland.

His band is excellent, and they tastefully interpret George's music with sublety and grace - with just enough power when called for.

This is a marvelously enchanting album which has always been at the top of my jazz collection. It rates up there with Bruford's IF SUMMER HAD ITS GHOSTS. Whenever I play it at work, everyone says they enjoy it, and they want to know what it is.

Thanks, George, not only for a great evening at the release party, but for continued joy through your album, PATACHOU.

(PS - Where in Paris did you take the cover shot? I was there last October on tour and I kept hoping I would run into the restaurant!)
