Customer Reviews:
Svend Asmussen is a phenemonenal jazz fiddler.......2001-02-16
Danish jazz violinist/fiddler Svend Asmussen will be 85 years old on February 28, 2001! Also known as the Viking Fiddler, he was one of the most famous and popular musicians in Scandanavia during the 1940s. He was arrested by the German Nazi occupation of Denmark because jazz was considered American music. Upon his release, he fled to Sweden until after the war.
This second volume of two (Phenemonenal Fiddler) includes the music from 1941 to 1950. The first volume was called Musical Miracle was from 1935-1940. It is clear that Svend has grown more sophisticated musically compared to the first and styles were changing. This material reflects the swing era more, and Svend is one hot fiddler. He was even asked by Duke Ellington to join his group, but he was too busy and very famous in Denmark and preferred to live there. The material here is fantastic and Svend does a phenomenal job.
