Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Clever Lyrics & Very Listenable Jazz.......2000-09-18

Lee Jeske's liner notes compare Leonhart to Dave Frishberg, and as a great Frishberg fan, I'd say that's a fair comparison. Of the 11 tracks on this CD, only two are straight instrumentals, although one of them -- Roger Kellaway's "Love of My Life" -- is one of the prettiest cuts here. Two more are reprises of Jazz classics with new lyrics -- "Freedom Jazz Dance" and "So What." Oddly, these sound remarkably reminiscent of the originals, inspite of the new words. But I like Leonhart best for the sense of humor in his lyrics. And arguably the cleverest song on this album is "Do Not Nag" (although "The Double Cross" captures some of the same flavor). "It's the Strangest Thing," about a Vladimir Horowitz concert, somehow has the same poignancy as Frishberg's "Sweet Kentucky Ham" and is probably the second best cut on this album. But I originally purchased this CD to get "Chuck Domanico," Leonhart's patter tribute to over 50 famous jazz bassists, and it's still my favorite piece of music here. This CD is wryness wrapped in superb musicianship.

3 out of 5 stars Quirky.......2000-04-21

This is a strange set of songs by a quirky songwriter. The numbers are similar in spirit to Leonhart's "Salamander Pie". This collection has an added bonus. It was the introduction of Leonhart's beautiful and talented daughter Carolyn, who sings with him on "Freedom Jazz Dance". She is a super stylist and has earned her title, "Princess of Jazz".
