Customer Reviews:
Crazy idea - crazy like a fox!.......2002-12-27
This was recommended to me eagerly by a musician friend, knowing my taste in peculiar electronic music. I went to the record store and listened to it, and I couldn't stop laughing, not because it's funny (though it is in places) but just out of excitement. This is a compilation of radical techno remixes of classic jazz vocals by Ella Fitzgerald, Carmen McRae, Nina Simone, etc. The results are a bit uneven, but when they work, it's thrilling, and they work more often than not. Probably the best track is Carmen McRae's How Long Has This Been Going On. The original was a typical Carmen performance, a wonderful delivery of a pretty dumb and corny tune. The remix changes the structure of the song, the harmony, and of course, the beat. What you're left with is a colorful mix of electric piano, pizzicato strings and a tight dance beat, with Carmen's tart and sardonic vocals floating on top. I think it's a huge improvement, and who knew Carmen would be such a natural techno diva? Most of the remixes are thoughtful dance pop, though there are a few more experimental ventures. The most adventurous track is Tricky's out-of-left-field sound collage treatment of Strange Fruit. It's not the most respectful way of handling this tune, and it doesn't exactly work, but you have to give him credit for taking a risk.
If you're a real purist about the great American songbook, you'll probably hate this. If you're a jazzbo, you'll either be mildly horrified or totally excited. If you're like me and your tastes are all over the map, I say give this a try, it'll make you smile and probably make you think.
