Clarinet Jazz by a Master.......2001-09-18
Chuck Hedges is better known in the Chicago-Milwaukee area and on the traditional jazz festival circuit than nationwide, but he deserves border-to-border recognition as one of the top clarinetists anywhere. "Just for Fun," his second CD for Arbors Records, features nearly 70 minutes of fine jazz by Hedges, pianist Eddie Higgins, bassist Paul Keller and drummer Ed Metz Jr.Tunes include "Night and Day," "You Stepped Out of a Dream," "Soon," "Black Butterfly," "Deep Purple" and the title track. Hedges, who toured Europe with the late Wild Bill Davison, can swing with the best of them, but his ballads are romantic and soulful.Once you've bought this album, you're sure to want to check on his other offerings on the Arbors and Delmark labels. Better yet, if you live in the Midwest or the West, catch him at a jazz festival near you.
