5 out of 5 stars A breath of fresh air........2004-02-23

I was a little hesitant to buy this album because I new how commercialised James Morrison jazz is. He is a great virtuoso - on pretty much every instrument - but I was reluctant to buy it because I thought it would simply be another James Morrison jam session with heaps of high notes and fast, incoherent licks played seemingly over and over again with slight variations. It was not, I am happy to say. This album has turned out to be one the finest quality jazz albums I own. Morrison plays far more conservatively, focussing more on feeling and style, rather than raw virtuosity. My personal favourite is 'Talma', a medium tempo ballad played on the Flugel Horn. I never thought James Morrison could play ballads with such tenderness and beauty. The solo is lyrical I could have mistaken it for a written composition. The melody is lovely. As usual there are some fast bebop inspired pieces, but on only one does Morrison literally tear the trumpet apart, a Cherokee based number called 'Zog's Jog'. This pieces displays some incredible technical ability, especially the unison parts betweent Morrison and his guiter master sideman Pete 'Zog' Zografakis. However it is only appreciable on that level. The rest of the album includes a funk track on trombone and some slower ballads. There is also a quirky little tune called 'A Brush with Bunj', where Morrison plays some angular but pretty bebop phrases over in an uptempo groove. Zografakis, plays some beautiful solos too, his playing clearly with a bebop bent, but nonetheless original among guitarists that I have heard. This album is a breath of fresh air for a musician who tends to play jazz purely for shock and awe value and clearly places Morrison at the top of the world in jazz improvisation.
