Sounds from Alto heaven.......2003-05-23

Alto Saxophonist Jim Odgren has recorded one of this years absolute highlights among jazz albums. As the leader of the band, he shines in the opener The Sign, gets bluesy in The Prophet and sensitive in the ballad Thoughts 9/91. Jim Odgrens lines are very lyrical and smooth, and yet very technically challenging. He is without a doubt one of the leading alto players on the scene today. In the beginning of Igloo, Jim plays with only drums as acompaniment, yet nothing is missing. Only a very experienced and thoroughly knowing musician can put on a show like that. Realizing after listening to the album for a while, that Jim is also the composer of all the songs, one starts to understand the incredible talent of this musician. Surrounding himself with the talents of Jim Kelly on guitar, Fernando Huergo on bass and Yoron Israel on drums, the result can only be nothing short of incredible.
This is an album we have been awaiting for a long time, and now there's only one thing to say: It was well worth the wait. Now, go get it.

"Her Eyes" is Jim Odgren's first album as a leader. We have waited long but it was worth every minute of this fantastic album.
He blows the sax with the strength of the greatest players. The quartet with guitar, bass and drums match the modern sound that Jim Odgren puts out. He brings
Coltrane and Bird together with the contemporary alto of players like Kenny Garrett and Greg Osby. But Jim has definately his own voice among today's players.
His lyricism and melodic creativity are beautiful butalso very fresh.

The band is grooving hard. Drummer Yoron Israel and guitarist Jim Kelly lock in with Jim's soloing and makes the music breathe.

If you want a new great alto quartet album, this is the one to get.
