4 out of 5 stars Some fine mainstream.......2007-03-20

This fine music, stylistically speaking, falls somewhere between Count Basie's and Dizzy Gillespie's orchestra (no wonder considering the fine line-up and the leader's experience).
However, some of the solos are not quite on the level of the best Basie's and Gillespie's big band performances, whereas some of the (modern) riffs, for instance on Moanin', somehow don't sound convincing enough...
If you're a general big band fan or a Clark Terry fan, youll' probably want to own this CD (although Julius Watkins, Melba Liston or Phil Woods are also very good on this CD). Pitty that Quentin Jackson doesn't solo.

4 out of 5 stars WHAT A TERRIFIC CD (4-4.5 stars).......2005-11-29

Quincy Jones' da Man, I'm telling you, this cat can do it all, do it big in his own way, his own style, his own everything, you name it. I still dig "Stockholm Sweetnin'" which is amazing, so as "Walkin'" (which truly stands as my favorite composition/song overall 'cuz of the movement, the lineup, and the background to that particular piece), but bad solos off the final track of the Disc, Everything off this album is a hit or a stand-up. You cannot miss nothin like this unless you wanna some feel-good timeless music or sum 'ol school that is. Plus RIP 2 Jerome Richardson, Melba Liston, 2 name a few.

Grade: B+

4 out of 5 stars Paris or L.A. with Q is great !.......2000-02-15

As a jazz fan it's hard to say what might be appealing to other listeners, but this CD is a good place to start. Jazz becomes a very personal thing as you develop your ear to what rhythms move you. My personal story about this CD begins when I spent a weekend at the Mondrian Hotel in LA, CA. The hotel provided it in the room as part of their musical suggestion. After a busy Friday on a warm spring day I found myself unwinding to the entire album, and I loved it. This CD represents some of Quincy's most earliest work as a musician. Most people are familiar with his other R&D works which gave him his Icon status. This lets you step back with him and early friends at a time when it all began. The sound is warm, alive, and still fresh, even though by today's standard it has been labeled with the classical jazz feel. Great jazz will put you into a feel good mood. This album will do just that by letting you to come back to those memories when you first hear it, and felt alive.
