Customer Reviews:
the coolest tuba player..........2000-06-28
Tuba Fats is a local legend in New Orleans, where he performs in the streets or at Preservation Hall. On this disc he plays with a British band called the Rue Conti Jazz Band, and the cd is recorded in concert somewhere in England. Tuba Fats is quite probably one of the best jazz bassists currently working (coincidentally, he plays tuba instead of string bass); his walking bass lines are constantly innovative and lay down a rock solid foundation for the soloists. This album would definitely be worth five stars for Fats' playing alone, but the band is clumsy sometimes, so four will have to do.There is also a vocal track here, and the singer is likely to be the worst singer ever recorded. It's still a good New Orleans jazz record, and very highly recommended. Fats also got his own brass band, The Chosen Few, and they are fantastic, check them out live if you ever go to The Crescent City...
