Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars My favourite Jazz Album of all time - and i've heard a few!.......2002-03-19

The Montreaux festival of 1976 featured some of the big name jazz artists of the time. On the programme was one Monty Alexander, appearing after Milt Jackson. And as soon as those first bluesy licks of Night Mist blues were played, the feeling of energy hit the audience and charged them up to a point where every surprise, every deft little arpeggio, and every sentimental phrase was given the reckognition it deserved. This was the album that kickstarted Monty Alexander into the throne held by Oscar Peterson twenty years before. And though there is lots of Peterson, the Jamaican feel, coupled with Gospel harmonies sets Alexander way in front of the other 'Accessible' Jazz Pianists. And the relationship between the other members is felt right through the album - right until the fantastic climax.

5 out of 5 stars A real foot stomping burner from beginning to end........1998-12-18

Monty Alexander's live work in this performance is remarkable. To me, this was his best trio, and maybe it's because everyone was still pretty young when this was recorded, but I defy you to listen to this and not have your leg jumping up and down, keeping time. It really burns. Drummer Jeff Hamilton's work throughout this set is a joy to listen to. I've owned this CD for over ten years and NEVER get tired of listening to it, which is a minimum of once a week. I now know the lines of these tunes better than Monty and his trio. Buy this CD--if you like piano/trio jazz, you won't be disappointed. Amen. P.S. I am not Monty's mother.
