Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars great Dizzy from the early sixties.......2001-11-06

At the beginning of the sixties, Dizzy Gillespie recorded some great albums for the Philips label. Among them, "something old, something new"(1963), "Dizzy on the french Riviera" (1962,with Leo Wright and Elek Bacsik).
The music from "the cool world" was entirely written by Mal Waldron. It includes a lot of haunting minor keyed tunes,in which Mal excells.James Moody and the young Kenny Barron are members of the quintet."The cool world" was a movie directed and co-written by Shirley Clarke, who also directed "the connection", with Jackie McLean and Freddie Redd.
"Dizzy goes Hollywood" ,recorded in 1963,with the same quintet, includes eleven tracks associated with great movies of the time : "Caesar and Cleopatra","Lolita","Lawrence of Arabia"...Dizzy's playing is at his peak, and there is great swing coming from the band.Bassist Chris White and drummer Rudy Collins give a perfect beat all through these 22 tracks.
Dizzy recorded a great number of albums during his long career,so it isn't always easy to choose some in his discography, but this is a great one, exploring songs that Dizzy will never record again.

4 out of 5 stars Nice to see these re-released... nice composition.......1999-12-02

I was glad to see these released as I love movie scores and am A BIG TIME Diz fan, so I purchased it without hesitation. Diz is somewhat reserved on these as he has to fit into the composition, but it's got a nice feel throughout.
