5 out of 5 stars New Directions in music.......2005-12-07

so, despite all the effort made by older jazz cats like (to say one) Herbie Hancock in (assuming) re-defining "The new standard" or offer "New directions in music" (excellent albums, anyway) the fresh things come, instead, by uncommon and younger artists like Robert Glasper, Michael Blake, Ben Allison, Frank Kimbrough and (you guessed it!) Michiel Borstlap. He took a bunch of first class musicians, crazy enough to try with him the (impossible) reinterpretation of tracks that simply could not be played any better but by the original Weather Report members with a lot of Synth stuff and a seventies vibe, ok? The additional consequent "bonus risk" being here the use of simple acoustic instruments! Well: this proved, in the end, being the ONLY way of giving a different and huge validity to the music of W.R.! Nothing like the perfect electronic sounds coming out from an even "nice and perfect but rather cold" CD as "Celebrating the music of W.R." or other (failed) fuzak attempts. No smooth jazz, here: just excellent and highly recommended stuff. Dig in particular the Gramercy Park collection and the other M.B. CDs, too!!!

5 out of 5 stars Acoustic interpretations of Weather Report music.......2005-01-22

Body Acoustic, devoted to acoustic interpretations of Weather Report music, is a superfine recording! Michiel Borstlap, rising Dutch pianist, takes the challenge on this album to interpret WR material in various group formats (duo, trio, sextet) and in tempos mostly different from the originals. Program also includes two Borstlap compositions, Centurion and Coco. Full treat from a great group of musicians! A recording deserving to be listed among rare gems of progressive jazz.
