Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars saving grace.......2005-10-25

this album shows alot of variation and experimentation. some of it pays off with beautiful results and some of it just goes nowhere.

the title track begins the album with a free percussion workout that utilizes woodblocks, shakers, and various little chimes. after 4 minutes of this, the bass enters in, letting out a slow droning slide that sounds middle eastern in tone and scale. pretty soon, the percussion comes back and starts keeping a latin-styled beat with the bass and about this time in the recording, something just does not feel right. it feels forced and like a sub-rate Alice Coltrane stoned jam session that can go either way. thankfully, as things begin to progress, the song builds into something worth saving. but a shakey start, nonetheless. i think it's the excess percussion that almost kills the momentum and the value of this particular piece. because it does sound quite nice about halfway in...but by then, the listener has waited 10 minutes for something good.

the second track "Prayer" is a stripped down bass and piano duet that is jaw-droppingly gorgeous. it's melody leaves me breathless everytime i hear it and it demands me to push the repeat button once the track is done.

the last song "Great Bird" is more of the same formula from the title track. some good moments, but sounding premature in it's scope. but...there are some lovely fragments scattered throughout it's run.

Death And The Flower is an unfocused and meandering album whose saving grace is track two. without it's presence on this cd, i would have to rate this a few stars lower.
