Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Strollin' For The Ages........2005-05-24

SUNDAY MORNIN' is prime Jazz, and a signature statement
of the sweet, strolling genius of guitarist Grant Green.
At once daring and inviting, this collection of originals
and standards is rich in balladry, and raw in jamming
intensity. His sheer musical wizardry is resplendent
with pianist Kenny Drew, bassist Ben Tucker, and drummer
Ben Dixon. The resulting quartet is tight on the groove,
swinging clean 'round the beat with a fire burning cool
as you please.
For those who know Green solely by his peerless work with
organists such as Larry Young and Baby Face Willette,
midnight-tipping ensemble offerings such as IDLE MOMENTS,
or his later excursions into Soul, SUNDAY MORNIN' may
come as quite a surprise. Whatever your taste, this
album is a treat for anyone who loves Music which
can both soothe the heart, and entertain thought.

From the opening strut of "Freedom March" through the
testifying title theme, taken by the hand into the
sweep-n-surry of "Exodus", your ears are abuzz with
what's in store. Amidst the moonlit serenade of Billie
Holiday's "God Bless The Child", ever-watchful in the
rhapsodic taunt of Miles Davis' "So What", you find
yourself in the presence of a special gathering.

By the time you are danced within the Sonny Rollins-
inspired twirl of "Come Sunrise", and wrapped snug
in the down-home lullaby of "Tracin' Tracy", you
know you have drawn breath within a wonderland
of delightful lyricism.

Come SUNDAY MORNIN', the air is beautifully clear.

5 out of 5 stars It doesn't get any better than this.......2003-12-05

Not a wasted note from beginning to end.

5 out of 5 stars Happy Swinging............2001-07-14

One of the major things that makes this record so enjoyable is the playing by Kenny Drew,he has that light groovin bouncing touch in his playing that on some tracks on this CD takes Greens playing to another level, Freedom March is a good example of this.,I think the title is inspired by the "Freedom Marches" conducted by Martin Luther King that reached it s peak at this (1961)time. I know from reading the Green Biography that he was at least mentally involved. There is two other interesting things about this recording too. 1) I think that Greens version of "God bless the child" many years later inspired JImmy Ponder to record this song(James Street 1997)2)I also think that Greens version of Miles "So what" must have had some impact on Ronny Jordan.(Antidote 1992) Finally this CD shows clearly that Green had the same ability as Miles Davis,.. to swing without playing a lot of notes.

3 out of 5 stars Very good.......2001-01-18

I liked the take on "Smilin' Stacy" (reborn here as "Tracin' Tracy), a nice double time waltz. Very powerful version of "God Bless the Child" (might be the best one on the album).

Kenny Drew (piano), Ben Dixon (drums), Ben Tucker (Bass).

5 out of 5 stars Great Set From Neglected Jazz Guitarist.......2000-05-20

OK, here's a quiz... Name three jazz guitarists right off the top of your head. I know what you answered: George Benson, Wes Montgomery, John Scofield. Nobody remembers Grant Green much and that's too bad. Because at the heart of Green's playing was a funk and soul that influenced then-emerging players like Benson and Scofield. Sunday Mornin' is an exceptional reissue. Using first-rate digital remastering, the album - deleted for many a decade - returns to bins (albeit for a limited engagement) and rights a wrong. Here's hoping a new generation will come to experience the soul and passion, grace and fire of an unsung jazz guitarist who was soooo good. Love Wes Montgomery? Think George Benson is the ultimate? Get ANYTHING by Grant Green and you'll be blown away by the man's talent and agility. Smooth, cool, sophisticated jazz that's easy on ears. A classic!
